Drug Store Tobacco

Which drug store tobaccos, for pipe smokers, do you like?

Sir Walter, Prince Albert, Captain Black, Middleton, Carter Hall, Borkum Riff?

When I started pipe smoking I started with Borkum Riff and stayed with it for years. Remember that this was over 40 years ago. Since that time, the recipe for Borkum has changed quite a bit, and the last time I tried it, the tobacco sold today bit like a rabid dog. The best drug store tobacco I ever found was Lane Golden Burly that was sold only at CVS. I used to mix that 50/50 with Red Cake Virginia, or 2010 and then add 10% to 15% Perique to the mix and that was some kind of good tobacco.

For my taste, Captain Black has a horrid chemical taste. I have not smoked Sir Walter Raleigh, or Prince Albert in years. I remember Middleton as a good tobacco (many years ago). I keep a tin of Carter Hall around just for the picture on the can. I used to work on the Carter Plantation and I helped network the hall that appears on the can. http://www.carterhallconferences.org/

Carter Hall
Half & Half

I can't say I've given all of them a fair go though. The only CB-White & Middleton's Cherry I have tried I got second hand & may have been very old & dehydrated. I still have yet to try Borkum at all though my favorite shop carries it; I just always get sidetracked. Sugar Barrel was another I have heard & want to try; but haven't seen in town.

Carter hall, Prince Albert, Granger and Lane 1Q in the order. Carter Hall if my most frequent smoke, heaven in a cob. Lane isnt bad, I'm not much of a aromatic person but if I'm in the mood I reach for 1Q.

Sorry, but until joining this bunch I've been a budget smoker. Usually I'm buying the big plastic bags of cheap aromatics. I'm still quite fond of them.

More to your question, I have tried and really enjoyed Mixture 79, Borkum Riff was OK, and didn't care for Middleton's Cherry.

Old Port, ever try it? My uncle grabbed a pouch the other day and it smells pretty good in the pouch. Reminds me of sherry and maybe raisins. I'll have to smoke a bowl with him this week to try it.

I have quite a few of them in my modest "tobacco cellar" which is sitting on my office desk :biggrin1: I have Captain Black White and Gold, Half & Half, Prince Albert, Carter Hall, Sir Walter Raleigh, Sugar Barrel, and Walnut.

Out of those, I would say that Sugar Barrel and Walnut are far and away the best (to me). That said, the only one I've tried that I've had a strong negative reaction to is the Half & Half. I'm going to give it a couple more bowls before I totally give up on it. It bit the hell out of me during the first bowl, so I'm going to try it in a filtered pipe. Prince Albert and Sir Walter are pretty damn good, and Captain Black is also pretty good (seems to jump from "good" to "very good" in a filtered pipe--I'm still "testing"). The last two times I tried Carter Hall, I can barely taste anything--not sure what's going on with that one right now! Also going to try that in a filtered pipe next time.

I like Captain Black white and blue pouches pretty well. Don't mind PA and Sir Walter Raleigh Aromatic is pretty good. I've found lately the "fancy blends" that can be ordered (bulk blends) end up being the same cost and in many cases less expensive than OTC blends and are a much better quality. Even considering shipping cost, the only problem at that point is the nervous anticipation at the mailbox!!

Half and Half is evil weed and must be stopped at all costs!!!

Well I know I can't be the only one who likes it or they would have stopped selling it before I was born! I suppose I'm going to have to start some sort of Half & Half alliance...maybe "Advocates of the Evil Weed". :001_tt2:
