Doxycyclene?

Ok so my dermatologist decided to put me on 100mg of this a day to control acne breakouts. At first it worked really well, and it has kept the acne from flaring up on my face to one or two pimples every few weeks, however two days ago I woke up with tiny little bumps on my chest and shoulders that looked like heat rash, then they turned into tiny pimples, when i pop them they turn into another full white head within an hour. Has anyone else been on this med and have this happen to them...I'm going to follow up with the doc but he is booked for a week and was just hoping to get a little piece of mind until then. Thanks.

doxy can be very rough on the stomach, and can also induce adverse reactions to skin exposed to sunlight...have you done other things to quiet the acne ? washing your hair nightly and changing a pure cotton pillowcase nightly also...all that oil from your head and hair leaches into your pillowcase ,then rubs it into your facial skin...drink lots and lots of pure water, give up sodas, sometimes a simple one hour face cake of generic calamine lotion will help to dry out the acne, wash it off with a liquid anti bacterial face wash...doxy should be a last resort...good luck

no they are in areas without hair its weird though it hasn't spreat anywhere other then upper chest and shoulders.

It makes sense that starting an acne medication would cause pimples that are deep below the skin to come to the surface more quickly, supposedly a pimple takes a long time to form. Wait and see after this initial outbreak if it starts to calm down.

I believe that these medications are not supposed to dredge up acne like retinoids, but somehow kill the bacteria and existing pimples.

In my teenage years, I was on, at various points, tetracycline, doxycycline and minocycline. Later I was on SoloDyne, which is a similar medication. I don't recall ever having any sort of rash.

I would call your dermatologist's office and ask for him to call you. He might be averse to this, but he might not. If you're having an adverse reaction to a medication he's prescribed (particularly if it's a skin reaction) he might be willing to speak briefly on the phone before you can see him.

the doc said it was normal it was bringing everything out from under the skin. Which was kinda gross to see...oh well its clearing up now. Thanks for all the input.

Were you out in the sun at all? I believe tetracyclines make your skin more susceptible to sun damage

It's definitely not a photosensitive reaction. I've had that and it involved turning bright red as if I was badly sunburnt but without the pain.

I'm on doxycycline too...I haven't had any sort of reaction (aside from more upset stomachs). The type of acne I get seems to have changed, but not in any way like what you describe. The best bet, I'd say, is to just talk to your dermatologist and see what the professional opinion is.

Please see you doctor for medical questions! The internet is a really bad place to get specific to you medical advice.
