What's new

Dovo. &

had a AOS customer today brought me a DOVO to hone.... it appears to have once been a 5/8ths.... but apparently was breadknifed to a 4/8ths...... *(he says he didn't do it and i believe him... his wife bought it for him as a gift in a complete AOS kit form from someone)....

holy #^%$ my freakin arm is tired.... i have NEVER found anything so hard to set the bevel on..... i literally scrubbed that lil bastid on a 300dmt for a solid hour trying to set the bevel... i FINALLY got it set then honed it out with a JNAT....

i am soooooo not a fan of dovo's....

i forgot to add this one also is a tad warped....

As was my Best Quality when I unboxed it from the factory. I had to send it to Jon (Raithskar) to see what he could do with it, he almost told me to bin it!! Luckily he ended up putting on a killer edge, but it's not the first time I've heard to Dovos coming warped from the factory...

I have two square-point no. 25 modern Dovos that I've been using almost exclusively for the past three months, and have honed and rehoned from bevel-setting on up. What can I say, I like them. The balance and simple aesthetic design is very pleasing to me.

There is no telling what method was used to get the razor in the condition it was when you got it Paco. Looks like it might have been the half hollow version at one time. Plus the increased bevel angle, Ill bet it was a pain, Probably closer to a wedge now :biggrin1:

bingo......

it was not a full hollow... it was more half hollow.....

that spike point is WICKED by the way...

Never had a problem with the 10 or so Dovo's I've had. Being a tad warped is no big deal but being chopped in freakin half would be.

 That is the funniest thing I read today. What the hell is that thing?
Should have tossed it out and sent a gold dollar back....

lol... i hear ya....

i dunno why but i just don't like dovo's.....

i must say *(don't know if it came through on the first post) but it took a really sweet edge AFTER i finally got the bevel set.....

Once, some reading glasses fell off my head and sheared off about 1/32" from around half the length of a Boeker's edge, which folded over and fell off like a piece of foil. So I bread-knifed the other half to even the blade's width along the length. (Maybe 1"-wide sanding belt might have been better for this?) Setting the bevel afterwards was very long. Apart from the amount of metal to be removed in creating a new bevel, I suppose this had to do with the blade being thicker slightly higher up. The round-point toe took a little bit of spike like yours as well.

exactly.......

the good news is the owner of this thing will be coming to get it here in a bit.....

i won't be sad to see it leave.... *(my tennis elbow is acting up now because of it..... :001_tongu...)

I own - currently - 11 Dovo's. All modern vintage.... I have not (yet) had a warped one, but have had two that were
(despite being honed/"shave ready") very, very rough on the edge. Almost unimaginably coarse/toothy...
One also is an olivewood handled Inox that is much more hone-challenged than the other stainless Dovo's or Boker
Stainless I own. The heat treatment or steel alloy QC appears to be a"iffy" in that particular case...

But, overall, the Dovo's I own are satisfactory to excellent - if not as capable as my some of my vintage blades...
As always: YMMV!

My Dovo (the Black Star model) is amazing. Has a hella sharp edge on it. Only one I've used, so can't say anything about other Dovo razors. I would buy more.

I bet that INOX is warped somewhat and that's what is causing the issue.

funny Paco..I honed a Dovo Birkshire for a customer who sent it to me....sure was purty..but whatts P.I.T.A. an hour and a half to rehone it...edge came out great finished on coti+oil...:wink2:...but stainless steel IMO takes longer to hone than carbon steel

Eric. I just honed a members Dovo that was stainless, even took a chip and fold out. It was no more difficult than any other razor.

i have never been able to tell much of a difference in ss and carbon as far as honing goes. i just honed a ebay vintage fridour and i have a few more SS also with no problems.
