Double Edge Blade - How long?

Hi,

This may have been discussed somewhere. I am a newbie to wet shaving and double edge razors. I have yet to use one (until Wednesday this week). How long do you use the blades for? Any insight would be great!

Until it's starting to tug at your beard when you shave. For most people it's probably 3-5 shaves but it depends on the person.

Some blades last longer. Some beards are coarser, some softer. That question is really YMMV, more than any other question. With a good lather after a shower, I can get 5-6 shaves from most blades. But a Derby? Two shaves max.

With daily Face & Head Shave & I'm a bit obsessed with BBS shaves.

3.5 shaves per blade using Gillette Super Platinum, Derby & Dorco 301 ST in a Flare Tip Super Speed

Considering the price of DE blades ($.80 each at the highest) vs. the Mach 3 cartridges I was buying ($3.12 each) - I'd be OK tossing them after each shave - of course, YMMV.

80 cents seems alot per blade. I am a newby myself, but I have seen 100 blades for about £10 ( gillette 7 oclock yellow and derby)Feather seem to be the most expensive I have seen, these run about £30 for 100.

I use each blade for 2 shaves, regardless of brand. I could push them further, but why bother?

DE blades are cheap.
DE blades are readily available when you need a new one.
DE blades are designed to be DISPOSABLE.

As you can see use will vary by blade, skin, and technique. But with the really low cost of blades, I'll use one for 4 shaves. sometimes it still feels good so I'll do an extra shave, but 5 will be the max for me.

Experiment with different blades and see what's best for you, but as with anything shave related its YMMV.

I use Gillette 7 O Clock yellows and only use them twice as they're cheap enough and that way you always have a nice sharp blade.

until it doesn't feel comfortable anymore. I'm one of those guys that generally gets one use out of my DE blades. Recently I've been trying the better blades (Gillette blacks, Feathers) more than once. I'm still on the fence.

+1. For me, my regular goto blades are the 7'O clock green & yellow packs from Russia and they last only 2 shaves each. I can't even use Derby thanks to my very coarse and "tough as steel" facial hair.

As a complete newb I'm only using mine 1-2 shaves initially. There's to many variables to count out right now. I don't need to be wondering if a bad shave came from a dull blade at this point in time. /2 cents

Paid $12.00 for a 15 pack at a specialty shop (won't be doing that again! :a52:), but even at those prices it's much cheaper than $25.00 for 8 Mach III carts that give sub par results from shave #1
