Dorco

I'm into the Dorco portion of my Tour de Razor and they seemed to offer a pretty good shave BUT I did kind of have to force it. What are your experience with this blade? Is this typical of what I can expect?

Dorco 3oo's. I moved to them from Derby and, not to beat that dead horse, found the Derby pretty inconsistent from blade to blade. Before the Derby I used the Personna Red pack and had very nice shaves with them, ran them for 4 3-pass shaves before tossing them and they were quite acceptable.

I like Dorco, but aren't the 300's and 301's the same blade? I read they were, just in a different package.

I've tried both and do believe there is a difference. It could also be my imagination. The 301's get much better reviews.

This has been discussed extensively time and time again. They have different edge grinds and hones, and the 301 is better. The 301 was put on the US market in 2007, the 300 has been around longer.

Check out Squire's reviews over at shave my face.

The problem is that once out of the wrapper, the blades are impossible to tell apart without a microscope or unless you try shaving with them. The ink stamp on the two blades is the same, but the edges are different.

There are microscope photos in Squire's reviews that show the difference.

I tried a 301 this morning and tossed it after I found a Good News disposable was shaving closer and more comfortably. Probably just me and my horrible technique.

I thought the dorcos were ok....but I have found Much better blades....still I could live with them if I had to ymmv

So far I have only experienced 4 d.e. blades. Derby's, a 5 pack dollar store brand which I believe is probably Personna, the 301 dorco's and the 300 dorco's. Of the blades I believe the dorco 300 blade to be by far the worst. If given the option between shaving with a dorco 300 blade and a sharpened spoon, I would choose the spoon. If my first d.e. shave was with a 300 blade I would have been so turned off I would have never picked up a d.e. razor again. I would be touting the virtue of the fusion and mach razors and probably would have snubbed my nose at the entire idea of people taking these lawnmower's to their face and think that you guys would be crazy to waste your time doing so.
That is the extent of my experience with these blades. But hey, YMMV!!! :em2300:

The DORCO ST-301s are some of my favorite blades. These and Gillette Yellows are my primary go-to's.

I get extremely good shaves with them. They are sharp enough to do the work but not nearly as sharp as Gillette Yellows or Feathers. What they lack in sharpness, however, they more than make up for in smoothness. It's the only blade that never irritates my skin, even when my technique isn't at its best or when I decide to do more than 3 passes for whatever reason.

The best part of these is the price, last batch of 100 I picked up off the 'bay for $8.50 shipped. Can't be beat.

What I'm trying to do is to simply try every blade out there so I can seriously know what I'm talking about and fully understand the different blades and the differences between them so I can find "the one". I'm starting on the bottom rung and working my way up.

I am not sure what the difference is. I thought the 301's were PTFE coated, but checked it both have that coating,

Contrary to some posts in older threads, the DORCO 300s are NOT the same as DORCO 301s. Confirmed by microscope in Squire's excellent blade reviews over here at shavemyface.

Snippet from his review: This is a very clean stainless blade with a very different grind and hone pattern than the slightly lesser 300 series. Whereas the 300s have two distinct grinds from the table down to the hone. These 301 series have just one grind and one hone. The edge of this blade shows more quality than the 300.

Maybe I'm blessed with a Dorco face, but both the 300 and 301 blades work for me. I prefer the 301, and prefer other blades to both, but I've not had the horrible dull spoon shaves that plenty of others have reported. In fact, I think they were a great accidental choice, because I found them to be somewhat forgiving of my clumsy greenhorn technique.

Dorco will always have a soft spot in my shaving heart because they are pretty much what I started with, and I love the funny name.

If the Shavepocalypse happened and all I had in my bunker were Dorco blades, I'd be OK, but once the smoke cleared I'd come out and try to scavenge something else.

I know I'm in the minority but I prefer the 300 over the 301. To me, when new the 301 drags more on my face than the 300. After two or so shaves the 301 no longer drags. But I get a drag free shave from the 300s from start. The 300s are my go-to blade. Another big advantage for them is that I can purchase them both locally for less than a dime a blade.
