What's new

Does your futur have play in the head?

Mine does - not sure if this is normal or not. I have to make sure the head is straight before I use it.

define play -

make sure you fully tightened the head to the handle;

i have zero play and the head stays steady/no play noticed during the shave;

It doesn't move while shaving, and it seems to snap into place in a fully aligned position, but I can move it (just the head cap) back and forth, creating uneven blade exposure with my thumb.

No. Mine is steady as a rock. If tightening isn't helping, you should think about returning it.

I'm referring to the cap only - the cap twisted slightly, so that the blade exposure is uneven. The head base - if you will - is stable and turns only when I am deliberately trying to adjust it.

Just to double check, there is nothing to tighten on the cap right? (not looking at my futur now)

How is he supposed to tighten a Futur? The head snaps on and that's it. Both of mine do move like you say if you try to move it but during shaving I have never had a problem at all.

Based on how it goes together, it looks like there will always be room to move it.

I can eyeball it and set it straight, but it would be awfully convenient if there was a little notch/line to line up on the head and cap so one could be certain it was straight.

The problem you describe is exactly what I experienced with my Futur. I ended up returning it to the place where I bought it and they replaced it for me. The new one was much, much better, but there was still just a little bit of play in the top cap.

I have an older one and it's rock solid. I've noticed in a few posts recently that Merkur's quality control is being questioned.
I hope they aren't starting to cut back and lessen quality.

With a blade in place, it's extremely difficult to move it. After washing up and applying a band aid :cursing: (you'd think I know enough not to play with sharp objects before having morning coffee, but this isn't exactly a normal thing for me to do) I removed the blade, and it still takes considerable force to twist the head, but it does stay twisted at that point. Fortunately, it nearly always snaps on perfectly straight.

This is the first really bleeding cut I've had from shaving gear in decades. It's throbbing. But it's only 1/4" long. I'll have to type with the other two fingers today. :mad3: Eh! I don't mind taking one for B&B. It's a good cause. But from now on, I don't log on until coffee's actually ready.

I have no play in the head of my futur, it snaps on and then it's rock steady. There might be a problem with your razor, it might be worth notifying the store or having it checked.

Mine is about 5 years old and, yes I can twist the head cap slightly.

I can get maybe about 1mm difference in distance from blade to bar from one end of the blade to the other.

It's pretty hard to explain, but I know what you're talking about. I have noticed over the years slackening in the two spring bars that the cap snaps into. I think that that is the reason.

It makes no difference to the shave. It just niggles me because I am aware of it.

EDIT: Just read the post with the link to the review. Another problem solved. :001_smile

The question isn't whether there's play when you attempt to wiggle it with your hands, its whether there's any play when you shave.

I'm going to check mine out tonight, but the amount of uneven pressure on a razor when shaving has got to be pretty minimal.

I bought one a couple years ago, and yes mine has some play in the head too. This results in an uneven blade exposure as noted previously. It is loose enough that I don't trust it to use shaving unfortunately, so I have not used it for about a year, too bad really, it is a nice razor otherwise.

My polished chrome one can be moved a little more than the gold one. It has never been an issue. Both shave great. I think unless there is alot of play, it is fine. When you shave with it, it should align itself naturally. Just my opinion and experience. Just reset it to even when you start and it should be fine.

I prefer my Mergress when it comes to Merkur, but the Futur is great.

I looks like some minimal play is always be present, especially oh high settings like 5 and 6, and it's not because of spring bars in the cup.

If you remove the cup and take a look on the side, it's clear that upper part ( which moves when you adjust the gap) can't be "rock solid" ( otherwise wouldn't be possible for it to move.

It's completely unmovable when Futur is set to 1, it can move just a little ( 1/10 of mm or even less) when it's on 2 but the higher the settings the bigger the play. When it on 6 "the play", on my estimate is about 0.3 mm in my 2 years old Futur.

Remove the upper cup, remove the blade, set it on 6 and it's very easy to see. It has nothing to do with the cap and spring bars.

I don't think I ever had issues with this. If, after putting blade and cup, you INTENTIONALLY and with force trying to move it, yes it will move slightly and the exposure will be a little uneven, but on my experience if you just snap the cup on, it's pretty much aligned and it will stay like that during the shaving.

I think if you apply the force needed to move it when shaving and holding the razor against your face, you first slice you head off your neck and then the upper part will move, since the force needed to be applied is much much more then the heaviest possible touch

Only screw on cup will be completely unmovable IMHO
