Of course one of the delights of traditional shaving is using creams that smell wonderful. If you can reinforce that smell with a balm or splash that compliments it as well, even better so that it lingers throughout the day. Even if no one else can smell it, there is great delight in knowing you smell good, having used a quality product, especially when the guy sitting next to you has bathed in some awful EDT. However, when people post their routines for the day, I see a lot of mixing and matching of creams, balms, lotions, and splashes that all have different scents.
My question is this. Does your cream fragrance have to match your aftershave fragrance? For instance my favorite smell is sandalwood. However, if I use a sandalwood cream, I always use a sandalwood balm afterwards to reinforce the smell and to make sure that everything is generally simpatico. I have never dared to pair something like a Lime shaving cream with a mentholated aftershave, or a Sandalwood shave cream with a Lavender balm. Is shaving like fashion? Is menthol "the new black" that can go with anything, or should you generally stay within certain bounds? My shave in the morning is the one time of the day I allow myself to do something indulgent instead of utilitarian. So, I am scared to mess up a perfectly good shave by adding something that will absolutely clash smell wise. I don't want to be the guy doing the shaving equivalent of wearing black pants, with brown shoes, and white socks. Is this possible in wetshaving? Is it okay to use two very different smelling products, if for instance the cream scent is known to dissipate once you have rinsed it off? Or am I fooling myself by thinking I can match divergent smells. Is there some kind of guide as to what scents can be paired? Thoughts?
