Does anyone brought The Art of Shaving brush? How was it?

I was thinking that I will buy or not for The Art of Shaving super brush in large badger. Right now, one of these brushes is on sale for $105 US Dollars.

I'm not sure about that I have think about what I'm going to get my 2nd brushes going to be.

I love to get T&H Rooney brush but I don't know.

What your experience on you the AOS shaving brushes? Did you enjoy it?

Never used one, but if you could buy a comparable brush from a well known manufacturer like Rooney for roughly the same price, I would probably go that route.

I'd agree (again, though, I've not used an AoS brush). AoS hardware (razors, brushes) is vastly overpriced. I don't know what this brush is on sale from, and it's sale price might actually be OK; but, for $100ish, you can get a Rooney in super plus a high-end soap or cream, or a Shavemac 177 or Saville Row in silvertip. All these brushes are incredibly well-made, and each comes with ringing endorsements here.

I had an AOS "silvertip" brush once. It was a good enough brush, but expensive for what it was. I think there are better brushes to be had for the price.

My first brush was an AOS pure. It will make lather and apply it to your face but you can get something much better for the price.

$105 will buy you a very nice Rooney or Shavemac, among other things.

AoS SS and SC are among my absolute favorites, but their hardware, while of good quality, is IMHO somewhat overpriced.

Generally speaking, you want to steer clear of AoS hardware (razors, brushes, etc.). Most, if not all, of the stuff is overpriced. AoS software (creams, soaps, etc.) are generally a better value, although expensive.

My wife bought the AOS Fine badger for me back in May. I've only been DE shaving since then, but I was using the VDH set with a boar brush for some time before that. The only other brush I had tried was a Body Shop synthetic.

I love the AOS fine brush. However, I've no other badger brushes to compare it to. If I were to buy another brush, I think that I would look for something that is a tiny bit smaller. It just seems big once it is lathered up and on my face, especially since I have a mustache/goatee thing going on.

When I use the AOS brush with the VDH bowl and soap, there are hairs that hang over the side a bit as I work the puck before taking it to another bowl to lather. It kind of messes up the outside hairs so that they stick out a bit, which I don't like, so I've switched my puck to a slightly larger bowl. I mention that as reference for size.

It's a ton softer then the VDH boar, of course, but still seems to have some firmness to it. I don't really have any desire to change brushes (other then wanting to see what's on the other side, sometimes). Given my limited experience, I'm happy with the brush.

When my wife went to the shop, they whipped up some lather so she could see it in action. I've never been to the shop, but it sounds like they are willing to show you how their products work. I'm the type that prefers to see things in person if I can before making a decision on something that's going to be with me for years. Is that why you are considering the AOS?

People knock AOS because of their prices, but I don't think I see them knocked for their quality. At least, that's what I've noticed in the past few months on the boards.

Good luck :)

I have an AoS brush in fine badger. I was able to buy this brush for 50% off so price was not that much of an issue. I can tell you my brush is a quality product. It excells at making lather from creams, I don't use soaps so I really can not speak to that. The brush has not shed and the tips are very soft. That being said, I think you are better served spending your money on a quality Rooney or something similar. I just purchased a Rooney 1/1 from Jim at Vintage blades and can tell you I love this brush. It is a lot smaller than the AoS but is very high quality.

I used VDH this morning and actually had loaded the brush with too much and could've gone 5 or 6 passes :w00t: It works just fine with soap. Eman, do you find the AOS brush a tad bit large, especially compared to the Rooney you bought?

Sorry, I missed the boat and forgot to reply to your question.

Yes, the AoS brush is a giant compared to the Rooney 1/1 in super. That is the main reason I decided to buy the Rooney. I felt that my face was being swallowed up by the AoS brush. I will say that the Rooney is more dense that the AoS but, the AoS in "fine" has much softer tips. In the end I like the size of the Rooney and the softness of the AoS.

+1. There is much better out there for the money. I bought one on Ebay for super cheap and was happy with it but would not pay $105 for it.

Does anyone know who Manufactures the AoS Brushes? I'm fairly certain they don't do it themselves.

I got the Pure badger brush for about $28.00 on sale, which is a reasonable price for that brush. The $55 retail price is a bit high.

It is a good brush - doesn't shed hairs, holds water well, lathers well, and is easy to grip - everything you want in a brush. Just don't pay retail!

+1....but it does an excellent job, esp. w/creams

I've purchased a few retail and on Ebay. The pure badger tends to shed a bit. For the money they charge I would say go with a Rooney-high quality but a bit dense, a Shavemac-excellent brushes, Muhele Pinsel-excellent brushes, and Saville Row-more bang for the buck. I have AOS lemon shave soap-great product, and Sandalwood shave cream-haven' used it yet. AOS brushes and razors tend to be overpriced, overrated, and over here!

I purchased one as a noob, got sucked in after the first shave and didn't know any better. It is a fine badger brush with a chrome handle to which you're referring I believe. As a brush, I think it is a quality product, it is gentle on the face (perhaps to gentle for soaps that aren't the AOS line) but the bristles hold up and I haven't experienced any shedding. Holds water well and with a good cream, you'll have lather for days.

That said, when I studied up on the brushes, I would have definitely used the same funds for another brush. Not because of quality but because of price. I got mine on sale for 85 dollars but I have since learned that the same or better quality can be had at or near the same price. Live and learn, still a good brush though.

+1. I got one as a gift and its a good brush for the reasons indicated above. $55 is a bit much.

I used one from a gift set I received. Decent yes, but a Rooney and some Simpsons can be had for just as much and they are better. In fact I have a Rooney for sale now.

I do have to thank TAOS. I never would have gotten into wetshaving if not for my stroll into one of their stores.

I have an AoS travel brush with the AoS travel kit. Generally, I like it - I think it uses pure badger hair. The bristles are more stiff than my Vulfix brush, but it's no more or less difficult to produce lather. They do scrub a bit more on my face, though (I face laterh). In the end, though, I'm not sure the brush is worthy of its cost, even as part of the travel kit. I feel like there are plenty of other brush manufacturers who create a luxurious-feeling brush for lower cost, as mentioned in the previous posts.
