For my entire shaving "career" I have been shaving after a nice hot shower, which is pretty much the only piece of shaving advice I had ever received.

I recently started shaving before my morning shower and the results have been much better than I expected. Another member mentioned that his face became too soft and puffy in the shower, which led to nicks and cuts. I had always experienced similar issues, so I finally (after all these years) switched it up.

So, what do you do?

I used to shave IN the shower, because the disposables used to tear my face up. Seriously, I would bleed every time I shaved, and the shower helped with the cleanup.

Now I shave after the shower, and never have much more than a weeper or two.

I would think that proper prep, would make your face puffy and soft regardless.
A hot steamy towel or a hot steamy shower are still applying heat and water directly to your face.

I always shave after, I haven't ever tried using a hot towel before the shower.

Maybe I will try that in the future though just to switch it up.

What I find odd is - I am doing less prep and getting better results. Seriously, I splash hot water on my face, lather up, strop, rinse, re-lather, and shave.

For the most part, I shave after a shower. Sometimes I change it up, especially in the summer months since I start to sweat by the time I prep my face and start shaving.

Due to my schedule, I wind up shaving every other day after a shower, and the other days, before a shower. Bottom line in my case, it seems to make no difference at all in the quality of the shave, as far as I can tell.

I've tried shaving before a shower and after a shower, and after the shower works for me.
This is another one of those YMMV things, as I have a close friend who swears by shaving before the shower, it gives him better results.

Bottom line is - whatever works best for your face.

Always before the shower... feels much better for me, but as nothing to do, with a better shave...:em2300:

Frank.

Usually afterwards, but if i do shave before the shower I make sure to prep my beard. Either way it is fully hydrated.

I shave in the shower, but after the actually showering is done. The extra water and steam seem to be very good for my beard.

My routine:
0500 alarm
Start the coffee
Fill sink with hot water and put my bowl and brush in it
Shower
Put hot towel on face
get coffee
Shave and drink coffee (not really at the same time )

If I tried to shave before a shower and coffee I'd look like Freddy Kruger.

Kyle's Prep for me before the shower. I've tried several time to shave after a shower, but it doesn't work as well.

I even tried shaving during the shower (again - it was my default for years w/bar soap and disposables) recently; I got very good results, but mucho irritation.
