Do I Need to Buy A Super Speed?

Apart from the pleasure of owning and using one, do I actually need to buy a Super Speed? I currently own a Merkur 34C HD and a Gillette Slim Adjustable. Is there a huge difference between the HD and the SS? Also the Slim looks very similar to the SS (correct me if I'm wrong). Is there a setting on the Slim that equates to an SS??

Thanks for your advice.

For me, there is a big difference between the HD and the Super Speed. The SS give me a closer shave than the HD. I prefer the SS to the HD and that's not to say that there is anything wrong with the Merkur because I still use from time to time (like this whole week so far). I can't comment about the Slim because I don't own one.

I have

2 Old Types
2 NEW's
1 Fatboy
1 Milord
1 Tech
1 40's Super Speed

and the Super Speed is the one I use daily.....I would suggest buying one.

I'm just the opposite... of course, as in all things shaving, YMMV... however, I get much better shaves from Merkur 3-pieces then from any Gillette. Something about the Merk head geometry just suits the angles of my face better. Such that the only Gillette I own is a Tech that I use for travel. I got rid of (sold off) my SS and adjustables a long time ago.

It's those chiseled features.

I recommend getting a SuperSpeed. It has been a razor I can always count on for a good shave and a good testor for new blades since it's very consistent in shaves.

Right now I'm experimenting but tomorrows shave will be a 40s SS or aristocrat.

If you have one razor that works well for you, you don't need to buy another.

But you're a B&B member, which means that the above statement means absolutely nothing.

You need to buy a SuperSpeed.

Thanks for all your responses, and I guess the overwhelming advice is YES! - which I somehow suspected might be the case.

I live in the UK and to my knowledge vintage razors are not as readily available over here as they are in the States. Are there any UK B&B members who can suggest UK online retail outlets? Alternatively can any members over the pond recommend US online shops that are willing to ship to the UK? I've never had much luck with ebay so would only go down that route if no alternative.

Finally is the 40's SS that superior to later models? Does the 40's model have the "round tip" and the 50's/60's/70's the "flare tip"?

Keep an eye on BST here. Superspeeds come up regularly and are relatively inexpensive. You should try both the 40's style, and the Flare Tip. If you decide you don't want one or both, you can always sell them again on BST, once you've met the requirements to sell, which you should easily do by the time you've tested the razors. And by the way, welcome to B&B!

It's fun reading about these vintage razors here, but the best thing is to get them and try them for yourself. Every razor is someone's favorite, and every razor is someone's least favorite. Only you can decide for yourself, after you've given them a "test drive".

Good luck!

:biggrin: Now how do I answer this question?

Part 1 = heresy!:behead:

Part 2 = RESISTANCE IS FUTILE-YOU WILL BE ASSIMILATED!
