What's new

Do all EJ's have the same head?

I have an EJ89L and love it! I've seen a few other posts about people having more than 1 EJ, so I decided to take another look at some of them. I noticed though, that they all seem to have the same head. Which makes me ask the question why are people paying over $100 for essentially just the handle? Maybe I'm missing something, if I am please point me in the right direction.

Yes, the current heads are just the same. I have the briar wood handle and love it.

You can buy just the head for about $22, while complete razors start from $30. I suppose different handles can have a different balance, but would have thought all would shave the same after a bit of practice. They are things of beauty however.

I also use a muhle R41 open comb head on my EJ handle, prefer the longer length :001_rolle.

Yes all current production EJ's use the same head (from Mühle/EJ). Before '09 the EJ's were fitted with a Merkur head (probably still available from lots of vendors) and I think that is the main reason they started to sell their new heads without a handle. They believe (and so do I) that their new head is an improvement.

I assume the idea/option is to buy different heads from EJ while still using a handle you prefer?

No, I just couldn't figure out why anyone would buy a chatsworth at over 100 bucks when you can get the EJ89L for 30? I realize that there's a difference in handle and weight,..... but really aren't you just paying more money for a fancier handle? I could see if maybe the chatsworth was an adjustable or maybe a slant or some kind of variation to make up for the cost. Or if they just sold the handle sans head then I would be more inclined to purchase one. But to basically just buy the same razor seems pointless.

Hi. You're seeing the razor only as a tool still.

There's 2 kinds of people on these boards:

1. People who come here to learn about shaving with a DE or SE or Straight razor and then vanish to never be seen again.

and

2. People who do everything No.1 says (sans the leaving part) and then stay and make this their hobby.

Which category are you in?

I think your right on that! I do look at razors and other gear a lot (everyday) and have bought a few razors off e-bay, but then have buyers remorse and think to myself "They'll all do the same thing" I am on here every day, and I don't think I'm in any rush to leave. I think this is a great hobby, maybe I haven't had any A.D set in yet? Well not full on anyway =)
