Dispenser

I found this at a flea market this weekend. It was more than I was willing to pay, but thought it was pretty neat.

What do y'all think?

I think, in a time when a lovely new razor could be purchased for a dollar, Gillette was really making out on the blades. Half the price of a razor for one pack of blades? Wow. Sort of like paying $20 for five blades. Quite comparable to Fusion blades, huh? With everything from patents to marketing to athlete endorsements, they've had their schtick down for a long time.

I'm thinking that $0.50 price is a sticker or a repaint from the late '60s or '70s.
In 1960 my father was making $2.50/hour at North American Aviation. Gas was $0.32/gallon in 1970.

Or...

It says "Blue blades in dispenser"... that could be for a 5 or 10-pack.

How much did they want for it? That's something that would be cool to have in the den!

An awesome addition to anyone's den!!! By the way, what did the seller want for it and did it come with the keys?

"Instead of giving a [B & B member] the keys to the [razor dispenser]...it might be better to change the locks'. Doug Larson

I didn't see the key, but she might have had it. The price was $190, and she wouldn't negotiate at all. She had some blue blades, and some circa 1944 camoflage blades, but her attitude I wouldn't even talk to her about them. Maybe they will be there next time I get by and can deal with someone who will deal.

Did it work johnnie, looks like maybe a restoration as well, 190 is a bit steep specially for something with a small buyers market, but then you never know

Nope, thats how much the blades were back then.

People seem to think that cart blades are "so expensive compared to the old DE style." Blades were just as expensive back then as they are today. Let me repeat that, the DE blades in the 50's and 60's were just as expensive as carts are today. They made money on the blades back then just like they do today

The only difference is you didn't have Russia and Pakistan making them, and they can't make the same thing as Gillette does now because of patents. Thats the real reason for change: sales

I'm not sure if it worked or not. It looked to be in good really good shape, but not a restore. The paint was great, but looked old. There was some wear on it in places that looked as it were from use. If it was restored, it was a good restore.

So? Pay the 190 and make it back 2 quarters at a time *LOL*
Seriously that's cool as hell! I have no room for it in my budget but . . . if it could be haggled down to $100 I know I'd be mighty temped to do something stupid!

I have been trying to find gillete coin op for some time and that one is in great shape. Most that I have found are generic ones and they are going at swap meets for 200-300. I would love to come across one of those , even at 190.

I know that is seems that there is a small market for this... but Coin Op collectors will go for it, even if they are not into DE shaving.

I think maybe you'd be buying a 5 or 10 pack. Looks like you'd be getting a dispenser with a certain number of blades in it.

You can't read it in this pic, but when I magnified the pic I took, it says 10 blade dispenser on the picture of the blade package.

That's pretty neat. It's $190 I don't have and $100 would be an OK deal but I'm sure some of us on the board would really love to have that.
