Discussion Thread for Review of Simpson 57 Best

Thanks for the great review. The 50 Series Simpson's don't get much play on the various boards. Congrats on finding a good brother for the Beehive (one of the best handle designs IMHO).

I hoard brushes 29 at last count. I went ahead and got a 57 after reading your review. I'm a soap user and the idea of best badger, backbone, scrubbiness and ShaveShoebox as the vendor appealed to me. Your review was good but the Simpson 57 is better!

Thanks. Tallow soaps were a wonder with this brush. I can't emphasize the density enough. It took longer for the 22 mm knot on the 57 to dry than the 24 mm knot on a Rooney Heritage. If the Stubbies and Chubbies are this dense, I can understand why they are as revered as they are.

Very well done review.

I got a new brush just this week, and now you've inflamed my SBAD all over again.

THANKS!

Thanks for the review! I had no idea the Simpsons 50 series even existed. I just checked out your link and noticed that the 57 is now sold out. Your review must have convinced others, too.

Started out with a humble small re-labeled 'super badger' brush purportedly manufactured by Simpson... the brush seemed more than good enough, with nothing else to compare it with...

Felt ambivalent towards Simpson brushes (over exposure, ownership change, confused opportunist product line and perceived poor value of higher range brushes with a distinct a lack of exclusivity) to be fair I thought I'd try one to confirm suspicions... kindly offered a Duke 2 from a fellow nooker, short story: first brush now sits out on the reserve bench and sad to say, it won't be getting a game soon.

And so, recently acquired a 57 best, another solid performer. Surprisingly, I prefer medium brushes (after on-going domestics with a Kent BKL12 which I just want to love and have to keep forgiving - but like a high maintenance/unfaithful woman, you just know it always ends in tears... my tears, pay now or pay later; but you are going to pay) they're good thrifty housekeepers with soap and cream; tactile bowl & face latherers, handle, flow, release, wash, rinse, dry and bloom - well. The 57 delivers all this, is a 'Q' brush and a strong mid-priced reference point with which to compare other medium size brushes. So where to go now... I will certainly add a BK8 to the wonderfully under rated BK4, I so enjoy.

Simpson-wise I remain hesitant - I don't just want yet another different medium style handle with the same grade of bristle, that's for sure... enjoy, fw

Patten, thanks and it is nice to have discovered a little less common Simpson brush!

Love your Trifitt & Hill jade, what a sweety wrapper! But how does it compare to your 58? I now it must be 'different' and it seems you prefer your 58? BTW you have a nice collection, regards Frank

The Superior Shave stocks all the models from the 50's series in case you were looking for more! Not trying to promote anyone here, just saying if this thread inspires you to pick one up, he definitely has them!

Many thanks for your pointer to Superior Shave - if I anyone was seeking Simpson... then surely this retailer deserves support, he's clearly appreciates shave brushes are serious business! Kind regards Frank

The 58 has more backbone, better for face lathering. The T&H is huge and better suited for bowl lathering IMO. Great brush, but I have discovered I am more of a 2-band guy, which is to say I use the T&H but not as much as my smaller, stiffer 2-bands. All personal preference of course!

Very informative review. I have been de shaving for almost 2 months and looking to buy my first Simpson. You mentioned the 57 was not a lather hog. How would you compare the Duke 2 to the 56 or 57 in that department?

The Duke, 56 and 57 are not lather hogs in my experience. There is enough flow through in the knots that they release the lather easily enough. You can't go wrong with any of those brushes.

Thanks for your input beginish. I am leaning towards a 56 for my first brush. Think I will really like the handle too.

One of the reviews that helped me decide on getting my 57. It's my first Simpson, have only face lathered with it. Handle shape for me looks and feels good with my small hands. Real easy to see why people collect Simpson brushes! Might have to pick me up another Simpson.
