Discussion Thread For Plisson 16 2 Band HMW in Genuine Horn

Fabulous review Paul! That brush is drop dead gorgeous.

How does the weight of the horn handle compare to the faux ivory Plisson handles?

I dont know the answer to that because I've not held a faux ivory Plisson. What I can tell you though is it is substantial. It feels nice and solid. The handle is total quality

Nice review.

Here's a couple of photos of my 16, actually an AoS brush that I was able to get during their sale a few months ago. Still pricey but at $300 it was deal for a Plisson if you didn't mind not having the decal. When I got this brush and used it for the first time I pretty much knew I had found "the one". I later purchased a Plisson 14 with an almost identical handle but I don't have near the love for that one that I do the 16. I have toyed with the idea of an 18 being my next brush but after some sage advice I have decided to stay with a 16 if I get another one.

That's beautiful Al. From what I've been told, 12 and 16 seem to be the money sizes... I'm very happy with my 12 and 16s

I have really 3 go to brushes and one specialized. My B&B 2008 I use as a dedicated brush for Castle Forbes Cream and my others are a Rooney Finest medium 2 band, a Simpson Chubby 3 super two band and a Plisson HMW 2 band size 14. I agree the Plisson outperforms the others the question being does it outperform it enough to jusify the price premium. I find the Rooney and Simpson to have a thicker fill of hair than the Plisson but where the Plisson shines is the combination of softness and stiffness. I find the Plisson to have as much backbone and scrubbyness as the others but its also softer than the others. Performance wise I think they are all equal.

I think it comes down to your perspective. If your someone who has to have the best then the choice is clear. For most though I think it's hard to justify the considerable price difference. My opinion of course.

My Plisson is the standard plastic handle yours is quite a looker.

But by the time you go down to the plastic handle versions the prices aren't all that much out of line with other brands... It's the horn and ivory that really get pricey.

I never realized that the big AOS brushes are made by Plisson. I'm going to have to frequent the AOS store near my house until I manage score one on the cheap. :shifty:

Paul, you did a great review and I could disagree with none of your comments. Maybe this is off topic a bit. Could you comment on your size 12? How does it compare to the 16? I bought a 14 because it had a handle that so closely matched the 16 I already owned but I also thought it would be similar to the 16 in how it worked. The 14 is much more flexible, some would call it floppy. Its saving grace for me is that it is a lather making machine, maybe even better than the 16. So I'm curious how the 12 compares. It has the same knot size as the 14 but a shorter loft so maybe that helps with some backbone to make it more like the 16? It seems that two band size 12's are getting rare and may soon be gone.

My 12 is a 3 band (even though the guy at Colonial Drug said it was a 2 band when he sent it :thumbdown).

However, it's similar in performance to my 16s. It feels a little bit softer than the 16 and has more backbone than my B&B LE '08. I'm very happy with it. To have double the loft and the same amount of backbone is pretty nice. This was my first Plisson and I got it and a 16 because I was told by a guy whose opinion I trust that those 2 sizes seem to be the sweet spot in Plissons. I wish I had a 2 band version to compare it, though. I've heard a lot of guys say they like the 3 band in 12 better than the the 2 band, but I can't say.

I'll say that it does compare favorably to the 16 for sure!

Outstanding review, and gorgeous brush!

I was very interested to learn that your Plisson has a good amount of backbone even though it has a very long loft.
I always felt that Plissons were rather long-lofted, but it is good to know that it does not negatively impact their performance.
