Discoveries/Highlights of the Year 2012-Scents of the Year?

So what fragrances did folks try this year that stand out as highlights to them for whatever reasons? Why were they highlights? Let's not limit this to actual first tries. Rediscoveries fit the bill, too. Which of these highlights were "keepers"? Were there scents that really pulled you in at first, but after awhile did no seem quite as interesting.

I hate to use the term "Scent of the Year," because it implies products new in general in 2012 and those with greatest interest across lots of folks. I am talking about what were our personal scents of the year.

Things do not have to be expensive or rare. Or for that matter, they do not have to be wearable fragrances. When this forum was re-named "Fragrance," from "Cologne," it was specifically discussed that anything that smelled good was up for discussion, including "room freshners," scented candles, incense, various hoodoo products, sachets, whatever, etc. There are "jurisdictional" issues when it comes to aftershaves and shaving soaps in particular, and even such things as bath soaps and other "body products," but as long as we are talking about the smell, and/or there is no edt/cologne version to talk about, I think they are all fair game.

Also, I am thinking of what immediately pops to mind. I am sure if I went through what I have posted here, I would be reminded of other scents that really turned me on during 2012, but which, for whatever reason, have not come immediately to mind.

For me--and again, I never want to appear to be shilling, and I try my very best to recognize any undue bias I might have--the clear highlight of the year was the Imaginary Authors line of scents. I suppose there are two of the eight in the mainline (hope I have that number right! I am not counting Carrot or the new contract scent, the latter which I have not tried, but which sounds great) that are not favorites of mine, although I know that one of them has a major following and the other is loved by folks whose noses I truly respect! But otherwise, I truly enjoy and have enjoyed taking the time to explore in depth, each of those six. One of which, Le Orchid Terrible (sp?) is the only scent my wife wears when going out. (She wears Sung's "Shi," of all things, during the day!)

To me, The Cobra and the Canary is the one that stands out as the most innovative. The one that grabs and intrigues me the most, and it did not do that immediately, which is a very good sign. I am wearing The Soft Lawn today. I had forgotten just how much I love this one. It uplifts my mood. I think it is jasmine, which I have said repeatedly seems underused in men's scents. Falling Into the Sea seems like a scent I had been looking for for a long time. In the family of Creed Virgin Island Water, Bond No. 9 Fire Island, and I Hate Perfume At the Beach 1966, but exactly what pleases me rather that something close. It does not blow me away as does TC&TC, but it may be my favorite of this line, and of the the scents I have newly tried this year.

I do not intend to slight Bull's Blood or Memoirs by not talking about them.

MPG Ambre Doir stands out as another scent new to me that blew me away. Seems very different to me than any other scent I have tried. I different take on oud, it is said, although I do not think I am capable of recognizing oud in any form. I would have thought this would be my scent of the year. However, right now it does not appeal to me as much as it once did. I may have overworn it and I may come to crave it as much as I once did. But right now it seems to have a slightly sharp powdery note to it, that puts me slightly off. I have had similar things happen to me as to other scents.

As to rediscoveries, Tabac EDC comes right to mind. I really like it and thought I would be wearing it a lot. However, once it gets past the opening and beginning of the middle notes it seems to fall off and I lose interest. Still, very nice stuff.

More in the realm of reaffirmations, I find that I still love Pen's BB and LV Vetiver as much or more than I ever did, which is a tremendous amount! Vintage Havana, too, although Havana is seeming very strong to me these days.

Anyway, I thought this might be a fun topic! In retrospect, I think I did slow down on new scents this year. It was not intentional. Maybe I have just managed to make an actual dent in the number of scents in the world there are to try!

Beautiful post.
And a tough topic.
I'll try to think my reply out.
You know, I think only sometimes.

Short version, on the top of my head, would be Duc de Vervins.

I'd have to say Tauer's Lonestar Memories probably grabbed me the most followed by Chanel Cuir de Russie. I had tried both previously and thought they were ok, but for some reason they really grew on me and I reached for them way more than anything else in the 'drobe during the cooler months.

I also grew a new found fondness for vetiver frags. Historically I have been all about tobacco and leather frags which I still adore, but I discovered a new affinity for vetiver based scents that I didn't have before 2012. I've always liked vetiver, but last year I loved it.

A few lavenders were the highlights for me from the past year. By Kilian- A Taste Of Heaven, Guerlain Jicky extrait, and Serge Lutens Encens et Lavande were all fragrant loves I discovered in 2012.

Great post Rob.

I too fell in love with Imaginary Authors. The Cobra and the Canary is my favorite, followed by Memoirs of a Trespasser. Neither scent captivated me right away, they grew on me with several wearings.

Tauer Incense Rose is another scent that grew on me, or maybe I grew on it. Dark, smokey, and peaceful. I like to wear this when I want to relax.

Dior Leather Oud. Leather and oud, what's not to like?

I picked up a bottle of Kouros a couple of years ago, initially I loved it but it soon fell out of favor and was replaced by other fragrances like Montale Black Aoud and Aoud Saffron. I wore it a time or two in the beginning of last year and thought it was just ok, it didn't seem to stack up against my favorites. Sometime late summer or early fall I wore it after showering before bed, I'm not sure what the difference was but I was captivated by it again. Since then I've worn it several times a month and it's always nice.

My 1st year in this forum, discovered that there are many wonderful frags out there- make that: many hundreds! Bel Antonio, A-Men Havana and Aqua di Parma Colonia stand out to me, altho Old Spice Lime and the various English Leathers brought back memories and I still love 'em. I also discovered that some scents I very much dislike and that taste truly is taste when it comes to frags!

Sir, you obviously have a very good taste in fragrances.

Best new scent of 2012 for me was Idole de Lubin. It strikes a nice chord as a kind of, sort of, bay rum style scent. But its more modern than "wet shaver" really. I also like that though it has some longevity, I perceive it to be more of skin scent...doesn't seem to reach out and slap people.

Also rediscovered and bought full bottle of Creed Royal Scottish Lavender. Wear this one a lot.

I think those were my only two frag purchases in 2012 which amazes me. This AD took a few years, but I finally put on the breaks and became really discerning.

I just ordered a sample of the EdT Seems that a number of Basenoters like it better than the EdP.

Yes, I went back and forth a lot. Saw that many guys at Basenotes, and a couple here who weighed in when I asked preferred the EdT. General consensus was that the EdP does last longer, but it is a bit different; a tad sweeter. Trying in Scent Bar, the EdP seemed more potent, but a bit more narrowly focused on some of the sweeter notes.

For what it's worth, the Lucky Scent masculine-feminine meter has the EdP as more unisex, where the EdT leans more masculine. As a frag head, I'm not supposed to care about that, and the scents are very similar, but I did make note of it.
It wasnt the main factor, but cost goes up significantly on the EdP as well.

Also, I'm not a "bottle" guy, but this is hands down my favorite bottle design.

The sweetness played a part in my decision as well, and I will also confess I noticed the difference in the masculine/feminine designation at both Lucky Scent and Basenotes.

I'm really looking forward to trying this one.

I will admit to being fairly unadventurous with new fragrances this year. I think that my only retail purchase was a bottle of Citrico at a CdG boutique in Tokyo--iif you don't count the atomizer of Ed Hardy Love & Luck that I bought on blistering hot day at a drugstore in upstate New York after I realized that I forgot to pack anything for my trip (don't judge me!). I finally acquired a decant of Kolnisch Juchten, which was more an acquisition out of curiosity than anything else. My real focus was to spend time wearing things that I already own and enjoy. I feel like I've been turning to Vintage Tabarome a lot (although the level in my bottle doesn't seem to go down--maybe the frag gods are smiling upon me?).

I will, however, jump on the Imaginary Authors bandwagon. TCx2 is, far and away, my favorite. I can appreciate the others, but that's the standout. To echo The Knize, my wife has also taken a shine to L'Orchidee Terrible. In fact, as I have been holding back on buying frags this year, she's been on a tear. Come to think of it, my daughters have been buying a lot too. Hmm.... Best not to think about that too much, I suppose.

I had forgotten that I had Lubin Idole EDP for the first time in 2012. A real highlight for me, absolutely!

Robert Piguet Bois Noir and Imaginary Authors Bulls Blood. Wanted to love The Cobra and the Canary, but it gets too sweet on me.

Highlights of 2012 for me were (in order purchased):

- Millesime Imperial. Got a really fruity 2011 batch. Went through more than half of a 120ml bottle! Delicious in the summer this is a fantastic scent to use in the warmer/humid months. Took it on holiday with me as well in the Mediterranean. Worked a treat.

- Acqua di Parma Colonia Essenza. I originally sampled this when it came out in 2010 and although I liked it then I couldn't justify a bottle. After I struck a bargain, I've been wearing this a lot. It's gotten me a few nods and compliments, so it will be staying in the rotation. A nice play on vetiver, patchouli and rose with some nice modern citrus notes at the top (grapefruit, mandarin).

- Amouage Epic Man. Wow! Finally, an oud/frankincense and myrrh scent that I can get to like. I don't care for oud, but the other two ingredients I have been searching for all over the place. I finally settled on this. Truly Epic and very masculine.

- Chanel Égoïste. After various attempts at trying to sample this I managed to get my hands on a decent sample - and that wasn't from a store!! The store samples were trash but I eventually bought from one just before Christmas. The luscious rose(wood) and sandalwood really give a unique scent that you don't often notice. My only Chanel and by far one I'll keep!

A handful were good enough to inspire a full bottle purchase. Domenico Caraceni 1913, with its rose, incense and tobacco may be my favorite. Parfumerie Generale Coze 02 really shines on a cool Fall day. Lubin Idole EdP, Amouage Tribute Attar and Christian Dior Leather Oud are all very well done, and are among my favorites.

Coze, DC 1913, Idole... You have good taste. Three standouts for sure.

Two that I sampled in 2012 and liked were Nasomatto Duro and Frederic Malle Bigarade Concentree. The latter is a great bitter citrus.
