Disassemble "Light" - Fatboy- Is it safe.

I hesitate to disassemble adjustables after reading a few threads about it but in this case I want to check out the spring in the bottom of the razor. (Giving it a good clean). This FB is slightly more harden to lock than the other Fatboy I got and I think this is due to the spring. I can easily live with this minor blemish though.

So is there any risk involved of disturbing the mechanism, or overall adjustable function with me loosen the bottom screw and take out the spring for inspection. I have no intention of proceeding to the other steps, thus fully disassemble the razor).

It´s an early one with screw at the bottom so I guess it´s easy to be done but I thought I´ll check with you gentlemen first. Thanks

Being the early style with the screw-on retainer, yes, you can safely unscrew it (might be left-hand thread, I don't remember) to get to the compression spring. That is as far as it needs to be disassembled, but certainly far enough to get any gunk out of the spring cavity.

The overwhelming majority of issues with these razors can be fixed without taking the razor apart, even this one . . . but unscrewing the retainer to get to the spring is simple, easy, and safe and will save a lot of soak time!

Let us know what you find and how you make out!

Thanks Brad, Will have a go for it!
While on the subject of soaking. I usually soak my TTOs in hot water with some hand dish detergent. Are there benfits of using liquid soap instead or is the result about the same? Also I tend to soak my razors overnight- would it be safe to soak them any longer.??
Lastly I got SO much more gunk out of my razors if I instead of having them laying flat-are placing them in a small glass jar- head down:biggrin1: Pretty much common sense I presume.

Yes Henrik, hand dish detergent is best. Detergents (as opposed to true soaps) tend to hold oil and dirt in suspension, while soap will allow the crud to form a deposit on the surface of the item being cleaned. I like your upside-down in a jar idea . . . I'll have to try that myself! I also like to use very hot (almost boiling) water. Soaking longer than overnight won't hurt anything - time is your friend on a razor soak!

Just got one them paper clips and followed the instructions that JaggerDragger posted. This was easy! The mechs was very good in the first place but I was just curious I guess.. After having loosened the compression ring I was rather amazed that everything looked super clean. However just for fun I have it put back in a good soak and we will see if I manage to get out even more crud.

This is from yesterday evening´s soaking of a couple of adjustables. I put everything on the stove (low heat). In the bottom of the pan I placed a ceramic plate as I don´t want the heat from the stove to have direct contact with the razors. (I turned off the heat when I went to bed- just to be on the safe side).

This reminds me of a chainsaw forum I frequent; the boys put their dirty saws in the dishwasher when SWMBO is not home. I tried it and the dishwasher stinks like gas afterwards...
LOL! I think the line is drawn just there. The sauce pan I am using is a dedicated to razors though. I used to soak them without the glass jar before. Anyway, the soaking project is finished after a few days and yes a little more gunk went out. I really don´t know if the removing of the compression ring did any difference. (I seriously expected that I would have found petrified soap in the barrel but it was clean as mentioned above). I will not go further with the dissassemble- I really don´t need to.

I am so glad to see this- i wanted to do it for the heck of it, but i can see there really is no reason. Mine all open and close fine :)
