Different Razor Points

Ok I have read up on the different points and in a Google search is there any real reason for a barbers notch and Spanish/Irish points?

Personal preference, mostly.

A razor has an important function to perform even before it first touches a face. It has to attract a buyer. It is useless effort to create it, if it doesn't catch the eye of a customer.

watch out for those square points! They will hurt your eyes, as well as your face.

It's all in how it's honed.

A muted Square, or even extreme Spanish Inquisition point will be mild as can be.

A roundpoint can also develop a sharp point at the intersection of the rounded tip and the cutting edge, so a roundpoint is no garuantee of safety.

that was my first hone, and it was not muted, but it is now.
and I have six more to go.

I'm sorry, but I like unmuted spikes. The corner dug in minutely maybe the first time I was shaving with a straight, but beyond that, I've never had anything close to the line-scratches shown above. With an open-comb SE, yes, but that's another story... Lead with the heel for starters. An unmuted square-point is just the greatest for sideburns (which I've had since eighteen, not going to change there).

I've read that the barber's notch is designed to allow a larger blade to 'emulate' a smaller blade in that one section; the notch allows the user to get around under the nose easier.

Seems plausible, and they do seem to work well like that.

Spanish point might be a kissing cousin... not sure.

Basically - I just like the way they look.

+1.

A spike or square point allows me to do better detail work for my sideburns. I've never had any issues with the point digging in, but as always, ymmv.

I just recently picked up an almost new Hart 7/8 Square tip, and that was the very first thing I did - lightly mute that corner. Shaving with is was easy after that since I was not worried about that 90 deg corner.

That happened with me, once. Thrilling.

In my experience, any sort of point is likely to bite you...eventually. It's exciting. You watch in slow motion as the point digs into your cheek and slices a tiny bit before you can stop it. I hate the feeling, but it certainly isn't boring!

I have always liked the look of rounded ends. It just appeals to my personal aesthetics. However I have found a square point to be preferable in practice as I typically maintain facial hair of some sort from beards to chops to my current extended fu manchu. The square point lets me see right where the cutting edge of the blade ends and lends me a bit more control. With the round end I have a general idea of where it ends and for shaving my head where I am shaving blind for a good 2/3 or so of the shave the round end prevents me from unknowingly scalping myself. Even then I find the square point quite useful as once again I get more control when shaving along my current mohawk and when I am touching up bits I missed on the first pass, it helps a lot when I'm using the toe to touch up.
Spanish points and their ilk have never really interested me as personally I don't see them having much utility. Barbers notches I haven't any experience with yet but I'll not base a blade purchase on it. If I buy a razor that has one so be it, I'll give it a shot. I don't see it making much of a difference in my shaving but I can see how some could find it useful.
However I am still rather a novice compared to well, probably most if not all previous posters, so take all this with as much salt as you feel appropriate.
