DMT or other brand? If DMT, I think the general opinion would be no. The DMT extra fine is rated at 1200 grit, which is considered a bevel setter and no where near a finisher. It will cut hair, sure, but won't be comfortable.
Coarse, Fine and Extra Fine are not the same grits between manufacturers.
With DMT's I would recommend the Extra Fine and Extra Extra Fine (1200 and 8000). I just received my 8000 this morning and I'm really impressed with it.
Also there are several abrasive charts the different manufacturers fall into . Diamond in one column , Arkansas and sandpaper in the ANSI one , Japanese and so on .
People throw around "K" way too much on these shaving boards . And with no comparable data for it . Guys use a Norton 1K then jump to a DMT fine . Then a Shapton and wonder why their edge is garbage .
I have DMT extra fine (1200), and extra extra fine (8000). This along with a barber hone gets me from bevel to shaving. Considering that you don't have to lap them, and they require little maintenance the DMT's are pretty good. I haven't used traditional water hones, but I don't plan on ever having that many razors to keep sharp, so I will probably be fine with what I have for a long, long time.
