Dial soap

Can Dial soap (glycerin) be effective for shaving?

Can you? yes! Should you? No. The dial soap I have seen are not really soaps at all but cleansing bars filled with SLS and other nasty detergents.

A shaving soap is formulated with specific characteristics to facilitate a close shave and protect your skin.

Any soap CAN be used for shaving. I have a friend who just rubs his shower bar on his face and goes at it.
Shaving soap however is specifically designed to provide a slick, cushioning lather by addition of other products that are not contained within regular bath soap. (clays, oils, etc.)
IMO you and your face would be happier with a soap designed for shaving. It doesn't have to be an expensive item, VDH soap is quite cheap at 1.50 a puck and lathers extremely well. Quite a good product for the price.

I have a friend who shaves with Dial soap ... or Zest or Irish Spring or whatever he has on hand to shower with.

He swears by it ... but if you look at his face, it would be a step up if he switched to canned aerosol goop.

+1 to what everyone else said ... you CAN shave with it, but you don't want to.

My late father in law used to use a boar brush and Dial soap, and very occasionally Ivory, throughout his life.

No I don't say I'd recommend it.

Fly,

Are you talking about regular dial soap or the new glycerin dial soap. I have the new glycerin only (cranberry scented) soap, but haven't tried it as a shave soap, yet. It looks possible. I will try the dial glycerin this weekend and let the group know.

While your at it, try some of Granny Clampett's Lye soap.

I think it went something like this:

Mrs Driesdale - "What you doin there Granny?"
"I'm making lye soap." she replies.
"Isn't that bad for your skin?" Driesdale torts back.
"Go ahead, FEEL IT!" Clampett offers
"It feels like leather."
"Yah!" granny concludes, "Great, isn't it?"

I have tried many gourmet brands of bath soap, and they all fail to make an adequate shaving lather.

It's much better to use VDH at $1.50 a puck, and not take the chance of giving yourself a horrific case of razor burn from testing with a soap not intending for shaving. :thumbup1::thumbup1:

Well, I tried it this weekend as posted and I think it worked great! The soap was cranberry glycerin soap by dial. The bar is red and translucent. I loaded my omega boar bristle brush and face lathered. I proceeded to complete 3 passes (my usual) N-S, E-W, and W-E. The lather was very slick, but not as cushioning as my tallow soaps. I didn't experience any razor burn and the same level of sting when applying my Old Spice AS. I have only shaved the one day with this soap. I will try a couple more shaves and see if there are any long term consequences. BTW, I used my super adjustable set to 4 with a red personna blade on shave #2.

While on tour I shaved with Neutrogena soap (glycerin) once. While it got the job done in a pinch I still recommend you use a shaving soap.

i remember going to the doctor as a kid with a rash and he asked what kind of soap my mom used..she said Dial because it was the cheapest..he told her that was the strongest soap and prb the worst soap for bathing. haven't touched that stuff other than the hand soap in almost 30 yrs. damnf'ied use it to shave with.
