What's new

Derbys are subpar

is it just me, or are Derby blades seriously garbage?

I like the feather blade but they're a little too sharp

Can anyone recommend me a good blade that's much better than the Derby but slightly less than the Feather :D

here

here is where i wanna be :D

That was my first thought as well when I first tried them. I kept going back about once a month and finally decided I just didn't like them! The first 100 pack of blades was Astra SP and have been very happy with them!

You want to be under the Derby?

I would try Blue Personnas or Black Gillette's. At $.29 a blade feather's are not exactly "expensive" - why not just spring for those if you like them?

Derbys are my only blades (new wetshaver), kind of like them. However, got a sampler on the way. Find one with a good selection and buy one.

YMMV. Derby's work for me and for lots of shavers. At the sharper end, so do Feathers, Gillette Yellows, Perma-sharp Supers, and the Derby-twin, Bluebirds. There are lots of options and preferences.

I would recommend a sampler pack as well. It allows you to try them without too great a commitment to any one brand. Blade recommendations based upon not caring for the Derby but finding Feather blades too sharp leaves a very large gap and recommendations can be very subjective. Although, all recommendations thus far are for blades that do seem to make a lot of our fellow wet shavers very happy.

There are actually plenty of folks here that love Derby's. I offered up 100 for trade on the BST a while ago and folks came out of the depths of B&B wanting them

As others have said Astra SP is a great blade if you want sharper than derby but not as sharp as feathers. Gillette 7 o'clock blacks, and yellow (sharp edge) are also great.

check out TGBE here if you want to exchange a couple derybs http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showthread.php/332992-The-Great-Blade-Exchange-2013

The good news is that pretty much any blade you could pick would be sharper than a Derby but less sharp than a Feather. I really like Sharks SC, Astras, and Polisilver. IMO the only blades less sharp than Derby's would be Dorco 300 and Merkurs, but YMMV.

I like Crystals when I'm not up for a Feather. Works for me in my oc's and tto's Tis my go to! Derby----feh! of course--ymmv :thumbup1: !

I never even bothered to try Derby's after all I heard about them. Plus, I luckily found the blades that work for me fairly early on. I'd say there's a good chance you'd enjoy Astra SP. I also predict you'll go back to Feathers eventually once you get a few more shaves under your belt.

As with anything here, YMMV! Blades that work for me are Shark SC, Blue Birds, Asco, any variety of Wilkinson Swords, Gillette Silver Blues, Gillette Thins, Gillette Super Stainless, aka The Spoilers, Personna Blue and Reds, Astra (good blade), Personna 74's (of course). Blades I don't like: Merkurs, Feathers (ragged and jagged), Derbys, Dorco. You'll eventually find ones that work for you.

The good news is that pretty much any blade you could pick would be sharper than a Derby but less sharp than a Feather

Personna 74 can't be beat, never, ever, by any blade made today. Too bad they aren't made anymore. There would be no need to buy any other blade, IMO.

No no no... You missed an asterisk.... It is

Derbys are C**ap (Cheap).

It would help greatly if you said what you were using them in? You are putting them into a razor and not a box cutter right? :001_smile

Tell us what razor you are using and you should get some decent suggestions.

Otherwise you will just here "I like this" or "I use that" which will be of little use to you.
