Derby Extras no longer work, need new blades

When I was starting out wet shaving a few years ago, I bought a sample pack from West Coast Shaving and found that the Derby's worked best for me. Now, though, they are giving me nothing but problems--they tug on my beard even with only two days between shaving and they never seem to get close enough. Therefore, I am in the market for some new blades. I know everybody's face is different, but hopefully some of you have been through something similar and can give me some ideas on blades to try out. I'm using a Merkur classic safety razor. Thanks!

derbys might work well in a superspeed..but not in s slant..but they may work well in a slim adjustable n redtp razor..takes time to find the correct "blade n razor" combo

One thing Ihave noticed with Derby Blades is if youae shaving with a drier lather , they will give a painful shave, if you add more water to the lather and make it a yogurt like consistancy , they give an amazing shave.

This may be part of the problem--I've been having trouble with dry lather lately, while my initial decision was made when I could consistently get a very moist lather.

As far as the sample pack--I was hoping to get some ideas so I could build my own. I already know some of the blades are a no go, so I'd rather not build up a pile of blades I'll never touch. A more advanced sample pack, if you will.

- Astra Superior Platinum (price/quality)
- Gillette 7 o'clock black Indian (sharp/smooth)
- Personna Lab blue (price/quality)
- Feather (very sharp)
- Gillette Silver Blue (very sharp & smooth)
- Bolzano
- Timor

Astra SP
Red pack Israeli Personnas
7 O'clock dark blues
7 O'clock blacks
Shark Super Chromes
Lord Platinum Class

YMMV, but all of those blades have worked for me. As a plus, all (with the exception of the two 7 O'clock blades) are very reasonably priced

I also used Derby blades for awhile. Decided they were not getting the job done. I could not get a DFS shave from them. I would suggest Astra Sp or Personna Labs. Both are good bades at a great price.

Astra SP or SS or even Rapira stainless will get you back on track. The Rapira blades are a fantastic price at present.
Thanks for the tip about a more hydrated lather for the Derbys'. I will give it a try just to satisfy my curiosity.

I managed to get the lather a bit more hydrated today and it definitely pulled less...it still isn't getting the job done though.

Thanks for all the responses, this gives me a nice list to try out. Hopefully I have good news to report soon.

the blades I liked so far are
Personna Labs
Personna Platinum(red pack/light blue UK packaging)
Astra SP
Feather(very sharp)

I just shaved with a Derby yesterday and they tugged too much and weren't very sharp, they just couldn't give me a nice close shave, only a few nicks but just not a quality shave

Derbys have, in fact, deteriorated in quality. They are acceptablity now but tey used to be *** out of ****
