Can someone tell me why my Derby blades are marked on one side with a 1 and 2 and then a 3 and a 4 on the other side ?

This is a very common newbie question.
The general consensus is that the numbers are used in the manufacturing process and have no bearing on how we use the blades.

Oh golly ! I was in hopes that I could flip it over and get twice the mileage out of a blade

The numbers indicate how the blade should aligned in relation to the earth's magnetic field in order for the blade to achieve maximum sharpness while shaving.
