Depilatory Creams

I am a 26 y/o pale skinned male. I have been shaving for roughly 8 years. No matter what I do, on the right side of my neck.. I get razor burn. I have tried everything and nothing works.

A friend of mine said I should try a cream. I eventually found a bunch of talk on depilatory cream. The first I found was magic shave which looks to work very well. However, on their site it says "designed specifically for black men" so I do not think it would help me.

Does anyone have any advice or suggestions with this? I know the hair removal will not be close and that is fine. I just do not want this ugly razor burn any more.

Any depilatory cream help or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks :)

I believe that is more marketing, as this is made by a company geared towards selling to a black market, as they are more prone to follicular challenges (in-growns, irritation etc) while shaving. I'm pretty sure the product is unaware of who is using it.

I worded my first post horribly. I often get irritation from shaving so I may try it. On a small patch.. if it doesn't work, on to a DE maybe.

If you have sensitive skin, using a chemical that is designed to melt hair may not be the best option. What shaving gear and shaving cream do you currently use?

I think you have some other issue going on.
You said the right side of your neck gets irritated, indicating that the rest of your face and the left side of your neck doesn't.
That means to me some physical property about the WAY you are shaving that is causing your problem, not shaving in general.

The left side does a bit but not nearly as bad as the right side.
I just need a simple laser treatment to remove it all for good, heh.

I know a chap who's had his facial hair removed with laser treatment, and he looks odd with a perfectly hairless chin. There's a difference between clean shaven and hairless.

I agree with Phil . . . and the Fusion is probably part of the irritation problem on the neck. When I was using cartridges I always had a burning, scratchy, itchy, blotchy (and ugly) neck . . . worse on my right side than my left, for some reason!!

Once I switched to a classic approach, with brushed lather and a double-edge razor the irritation went away within days. Also check out the mantic59 videos on You Tube for some great shaving education!

So I found a friend who uses the regular magic shave. After seeing the skin irritation after a use, I will stick with the razor burn. My goodness it was horrible. It did remove some hair... and caused a red face. While it did go away after 45 minutes, it is not something I really want to try. He said he'd wait 24 hours and shave anything he missed, which, after the irritation, I'd be afraid to shave the next day.

I may ditch my fusion and go with the 3 blade razor I have. It is an M3 Power Gillette. The razor however, no longer pulsates to "pull the hairs up" (BS). The shave may not be as close (3 blades compared to 4) but all I care about is removing the razor burn.

For someone who is not wanting to yet get a DE razor (I will eventually, promise lol)... does anyone have any suggestions?

The Aveeno Active Naturals Therapeutic Shave Gel and Nivea for Men sensitive After Shave Extra Soothing Balm considerably cut down my razor burn compared to the stuff I used before it. Actually, I think someone on here suggested those two items. I cannot remember.

If you want to get an idea as to how a single blade will work, try to find BIC Metal disposable razors. MUCH better than the BIC Sensitives and about the same price. Use a light touch, and try not to use too many products at the same time (scrub, cleaner, AS balm, etc.). The larger Bed Bath and Beyond stores, with the health and beauty section, carry them, as to many (but not all) supermarkets.

I used them for a couple months while trying to decide which DE I wanted to get, and they helped a lot in making the transition from multi-blades to the DE.

If you can't find them and are interested in trying them, PM me your address and I'll send you some.

I'd also recommend going to The Body Shop (in many upscale malls) and try their Maca Root shave cream - you can pick up a brush, too, but you can use the cream brushless. You can buy a tube for $10, or ask for several sample jars - good for about 3-4 shave each.

I would also recommend the C. O. Bigelow shave cream sold at Bath and Body Works stores (in most every mall in the US, it seems), but it does contain menthol which might be a problem for your sensitive skin (although many who claim sensitive skin have no problems with it).

Thank you very much. I will be out this weekend and add that to the list. I saw BIC Metal Disposables and BIC Sensitives on ebay.

I recently switched my face wash to an alcohol free wash. I am hoping that will help matters also.

Ah - 5 blades & scrubbing colloidal oatmeal.

Sit down & hold tight; this is going to be a long, enjoyable ride where less is more, and "less" done to wretched excess is best.

Soon you will be debating the relative merits of boar vs badger, cream vs soap, aftershave splash vs aftershave balm.

Shortly after, you'll be deciding between fan shape or bulb shape, MWF vs Tabac, and Aqua Velva vs Old Spice.

However - and I say this with utmost caution - beware of The Veg until you are ready for it.

Welcome to B&B.

I like the idea of less. Many people told me give up my razor and go back to less blades. The oatmeal shaving cream isn't bad. I actually like the smell more than that fragrant crap I used to use lol.

I eagerly await the day I am a shaving expert. Until then I will blindly do whatever I am told to do lol.
