What's new

Densest Boar Brush?

Having accidentally toileted my Omega 49 a couple weeks ago, I decided on something new... sort of... the Koh-I-Noor SC68. Lovely metal handle, with a very similar boar knot to my old Omega, just a touch thinner and softer tips. While I enjoyed it from day one, and it's yet to lose a hair, I'm in the mood for something different.

I also have a very dense Rooney 1/1 Super which is lovely, but I believe boar is the bristle for me.

What I'm looking for is for something more dense, and preferably has a shorter loft. I'm a face latherer for certain. I think a brush with greater density would be just the ticket and give me the face feel I'm looking for.

Yeah, I've been browsing through the site, along with TSD, and it looks like this is supposed to be packed pretty tightly. A couple others have also stated about the density of the Boreal 976, but it's not a very common brush.

I just had my first experience of the Boreal 976 this morning. Incredibly dense, fabulous back bone. The tips on the first go round had a little scritch, but I am confident these will soften up in a week or two. I am very, very impressed with this brush. Its handle is a high quality faux wood, with great weight and feel. This boar brush is making me think about badger in a whole new way. Here are some pre-bloom pics.

I haven't actually used it, but the Semogue 2000 brush is supposed to be very dense.

I have one.

Yes.

I have to kind of push lather out of it between passes to keep it against the warming surface. Otherwise, three passes worth of lather hides in the loft.

Thumbs up for the Boreal 976 too. I find it very very dense with soft tips.

I think the handle is real wood not faux too.

I think over time the thick layer of finish on the wood is going to chip and peel but otherwise this is a fantastic boar brush.

Big thumbs up to the Boreal. Very dense. Made the Omega 31064 feel like a limp floppy mess by comparison. For $20 you can't go wrong. They can be found at Shoebox Shave Shop. Gary, the vendor, is top notch.

This feels like a supid question, but is the colored band on the Boreal natural or dyed? I think some boar brush makers dye the hair to make it look more like badger. I don't care for that. If I buy a horse, I don't want it painted to look like a zebra. Just sell me the horse.

Pretty sure that band is always dye.

No question, its a dye job. The poor boar's have an inferiority complex and are desperately trying to look like badger when they just have to realize they are amazing for who they are. Oink is beautiful, G. damn it.

I found another website, but they appear to be banned from B&B? Shoebox shave shop appears to be the only approved vendor.

ShoeBox Shave Shop is the only place I know of in the States.

Okay, I've dealt with Shoebox before. Great service. I may have to peruse the wares there in the near future and procure that brush and maybe some other goods. Thanks!

Seraphim, beautifully done. SHarris asked me to post the dimensions of the Boreal 960.

Handle Height: 54mm
Knot Diameter: 21mm
Knot Loft: 58mm

Not to be contentious, while I love the brush, and have no complaints - the handle is plastic, with a well executed plastic laminate. Trust me. Look at the photos, wood with that kind of burl is fine and rare and can not be bought for $20. Darjeeling knows.

976 Right?

If that is fake wood it certainly is a quality done piece. I would have sworn it was wood burl. However it would be pretty hard to sell it at that cost.

I need to go look more carefully. I have a couple of chips of the finish at the knot base now in mine.
