What's new

Definitely a newbie

I just received my first fountain pen in the mail today. Got a Parker urban in a trade and it seems pretty nice, I like the weight and the feel of it when writing. I wouldn't say that it is leaking, maybe just letting a little too much ink go when I write. Not a huge deal, just wondering if any of you experienced folk had any tips for a newbie?

It happens Soldierdan, Im guessing i can call you Dan ?, the feed can be adjusted if it has to, but i wouldnt recommend you do that yourself just yet, but before you do anything i have a few questions if you have the time maybe we can find out if its a simple fix

What are you using for a feed (how is it storing the ink) ? is it a disposable cartridge that came with the pen new, or is it a converter, a removable tube with a twisting plunger at the end

what kind(s) of paper were you writing on, and did you try it on more then one ?

do you know what kind of ink it is ?

how much did you write with it ?

did you flush it out before your first time out ?

and finally, and most importantly, do you have Pictures ? of the pen, although seeing the ink line the pen lays down may help as well

I know its a lot but it may help you to love the living legends out of that pen for a very long long time

Btw Welcome to the Nib, hope we infotain you

Congrats on the new pen. Are you wondering how to get the pen to write Dryer? ( not as much ink when you write) What size Nib does it have?

Different inks will write wetter and dryer. There are members here who know way more about these thing than I do. I'm sure someone will chime in and help you out.

We like pictures, here in the Nib. If you get a chance show us a pic of your new pen:thumbup:

EDIT; What James said :)

Ok, trying to answer all of the questions lol.
It's currently on a cartridge, written about 20 lines testing it out on 3 different types of paper, yes I flushed it, not sure on the type of ink (I think it's the one that came with it), and it's got a medium steel nib on it.

Here are some pictures (don't have one of its lines):

Oh, and thanks so much for the speedy reply, I'm lost on this kinda stuff. Before I got this pen, my nicest pen was a ballpoint.

Is that ballpoint, a pen that someone made for you? It seems familiar.

Can you give us a writing sample? Fountain pens tend to write wetter than a ballpoint. Maybe you're not used to it or maybe there's a problem with the pen.

That second picture is showing a converter not a cartridge, does it have a little slide button to move a small piston to suck up ink and expel it ?, if so is it all the way to the top of the converter, meaning the furthest away from the nib ?, or is it a twist style one that moves a little inner piston

The ball point is a pen I was given at a gun show. I talked to the maker for a while and smoothed his feathers about his son being in Afghanistan, and he gave it to me as thanks for service. I tried to pay him, but he just wouldn't take my money.

The pictures of the FP are the ones that the original owner sent me, I have changed it to the cartridge.

Theres a few members with urbans here and I don't recall them mentioning a wet writer, maybe one of them can chip in

My wife has an identical Parker Urban (picked it up at a ridiculously low price when a local office supply store was closing) and it's quite nice. She's using the Parker cartridges and there's been no problem with ink flow, neither excessive or dry. I'm pretty sure they just came with a Medium nib. Like James said, use no pressure and play around with angle of the pen to the paper. You may just be forcing it...kind of a typical carry-over from using ballpoint pens for many years.
