Decanter Liquor?

It seems like the rich, executive types in movies always have their liquor nicely displayed in a glass decanter with a nice set of whisky glasses around it. Is there a reason for this, or is it purely decorative. I always thought it look pretty cool, and just bought a house this summer, so it's time to set up a little bar area.

Also, what do they keep in it? They always seem to drink it straight--no mixers. What are good liquors to "sip"?

Thanks

Commonly decanted liquors and liqueurs are whiskies, Cognac, port, and sherry. Decanting is decorative but it also allows certain flavors to open up and others to diminish. This is especially true of wines and fortified wines but if you think it'll hang around in the decanter a long time, I'd stay away from the port and sherry since they'll oxidize, marring the flavors. I'm not a Cognac kind of guy so I'm not sure about that libation's longevity.

Whisky/whiskey will keep quite nicely in a decanter and comes in seemingly endless varieties: scotch, bourbon, Tennessee, rye, etc. I'm still longing for a decanter to match my Tiffany whiskey glasses.

But if your a vodka or tequila fan, nothing says you can't decant those, too.

Beware.

The best looking decaters are cut crystal ... and that means lead crystal. The lead leaches out and you get lead poisoning.

Some higher proof whiskeys are good for sipping. Alcohol that is heavy, cloying, sweet, complex I usually like to sip.

As to the decanter, I would spend money on the glass. You'll be spending more time interacting with the liquor and the glass. I'd rather follow in Dekard's footsteps in Blade Runner and pour from the bottle into a nice heavy glass.

A good 90 proof whiskey is bulliet bourbon. It is smooth and level as a table, great for sipping. Being a good mountain boy, born and raised in the southern Appalachians of Georgia, it should not be hard for ya'll to figure out what my favorite libation is. I happen to be sipping on a mason jar right now so CHEERS! :a54:

When it comes to sipping, I'm a big fan of bourbon.

I actually received a NICE, personalized decanter as a groomsman gift from one of my best friends. Possibly the coolest, most well-thought-out gift I've ever received. Helps put a classy spin on getting drunk :tongue_sm

Better yet....find a grocery store that is going out of business or a restaurant supply house and get your hands on a couple of these coolers. They are great to keep wines and beer nice and cold and they are always a great conversation piece. I have my stash in the basement and keep it filled so everything is nice and cold. Forget about the uppity decanters and get a real display unit....

Cheers:ohmy::ohmy:

It took me a while to find my ideal whiskey glasses and as I mentioned earlier, I found them at Tiffany's of all places. These guys are a handful of heft.

That's a nice glass.

Here's another interesting glass that is suppose to be like the one used in Blade Runner.

MD 20 20 is always a great conversation. If only I could remember it.

I'd also avoid the lead crystal decanters - they really do leach into your beverage.

I do have some nice lead crystal decanters I've inherited. I find it a better solution to fill them with water and food coloring for display. Or maybe a bottom shelf liquor, but I wouldn't want anyone to mistakenly drink it. It's better to keep the good stuff in glass bottles under the bar.

as for sipping... A good 100% blue agave anejo tequila is nice and I see no reason why it couldn't be decanted.
