De Vergulde Hand AS? Opinions?

I saw an aftershave at The Shave Den called "De Vergulde Hand". I think it translates from Dutch as The Gilded Hand, but I don't know if I have the context right. I'm assuming it's Dutch.

Anyway, has anyone tried this? If so, how do you like it, and what are the fragrance notes of this scent if you can describe them. Thanks.

De Vergulde Hand is indeed a Dutch brand of (cheap) drugstore wetshaving stuff. But the only AS they make/sell is a balm; there are no DVH splashes.

Never used the balm so I know nothing about the scent. The only thing I used from them, and still regret it, is the shaving soap. Use it as a paint remover now...:001_rolle but some people really like it. It lathers like crazy though protection and cushioning are not at the top. I was put off by the scent and even more so by the drying of my skin; no other soap ever did that to me as DVH. But that is probably just a case of YMMV.

Hello,

'Verguld' literally means 'gold plated'.
And it is Dutch indeed. Very common in the supermarkets, and very reasonably priced.

It claims to be the oldest registered brand in the world also.
Their website seems to be down right now.

I do not know the AS, but the most DVH products are of the powdery, barbershop-type of scents.

A TSD review here.

Thanks gentlemen. I'm always curious about brands I have not heard of before. Actually Shave Den has this listed as an aftershave SPRAY I believe. Could be an Eau de Toilette they have mislabled as an aftershave.

NOS, there is not an EDT.

I think you translate correctly. Know the soap and cream, was my first shaving soap when I started wet shaving, some 35 years ago. Then I did not like the smell, recently I have started to use it again, and now it smells ok. I have used the as balm in past too, was nice stuff. I do not know the as spray.

I got a few samples of the balm when I placed a large order with paul at the dutch shaving company.it does have that 1940's barbershop scent, and it is very soothing.the balm is a white cream.it does what it is supposed to do..

Isn't that the greatest guy to deal with? Visiting his shop is even better; you think you stepped back a century in time!

Yes, I have seen The Dutch Shaving Shop on the web also. The last time I was over in Holland was around 1992 I think, and I enjoyed it very much. They still used the Guilder, I guess they use the Euro now! Thanks again.

I use the Aftershave Balsem (white cream). While I think the Vergulde Hand shaving soap or shaving cream is not that great, the aftershave balsem is an excellent product.
