So I just started using a DE razor per the suggestion of a friend and as a result of a little internet research. I found on this site a nearby shop (Gentlemen's Best in central CT) and stopped by on Tuesday. First, let me say that Ray has a really fantastic shop. He was very helpful, had lots of good advice and sent me home with a great razor. I definitely left with exactly what I needed without spending a fortune.
So I shaved this morning with my new set up. I don't expect to be a regular fixture around here, but I just figured that I should let you in on my impression. First off, the disposable razors that I used to use are a total joke in comparison with my DE razor. It's like the difference between riding a tricycle and driving a Ferrari. In fact, I can't figure out why they ever started making disposables to be honest. My main complaint before was that the blades just wouldn't cut my beard until after I'd chewed up my face with the stupid things. I don't shave often (sometimes over a week in between) and I have a beard so there is not much to shave, but I need something that will cut nonetheless. This should be a simple operation. Ray could attest that when I went into his shop my beard was quite unkept, almost embarrassingly so. He sent me home with a Gillette DE razor (1940's I believe, don't remember exactly) and some proper shave soap. This razor cut through my beard with unmatched precision, leaving my face feeling fresh like never before. The truly remarkable thing is that it was actually faster than disposable razors. I used to spend half the time trying to clean the stupid cut hairs that get stuck in between the blades on those things. The two edges and stainless steel construction totally eliminate this problem, making things way easier. Also, I did not miss any spots on my neck as I would have before and making straight lines to outline my beard is simplified, as this razor is actually cutting the hair, and doing so in a predictable way. No nicks or cuts either. I'm convinced that you would have to either be retarded or be shaving during an earthquake (which is pretty much the same thing) to cut yourself with one of these. Basically, after shaving with my DE razor I'm no longer sure exactly what a disposable razor is intended to be used for. Thanks to Ray for running a great shop, and everyone here for the good info.
