DE razors

So I just started using a DE razor per the suggestion of a friend and as a result of a little internet research. I found on this site a nearby shop (Gentlemen's Best in central CT) and stopped by on Tuesday. First, let me say that Ray has a really fantastic shop. He was very helpful, had lots of good advice and sent me home with a great razor. I definitely left with exactly what I needed without spending a fortune.

So I shaved this morning with my new set up. I don't expect to be a regular fixture around here, but I just figured that I should let you in on my impression. First off, the disposable razors that I used to use are a total joke in comparison with my DE razor. It's like the difference between riding a tricycle and driving a Ferrari. In fact, I can't figure out why they ever started making disposables to be honest. My main complaint before was that the blades just wouldn't cut my beard until after I'd chewed up my face with the stupid things. I don't shave often (sometimes over a week in between) and I have a beard so there is not much to shave, but I need something that will cut nonetheless. This should be a simple operation. Ray could attest that when I went into his shop my beard was quite unkept, almost embarrassingly so. He sent me home with a Gillette DE razor (1940's I believe, don't remember exactly) and some proper shave soap. This razor cut through my beard with unmatched precision, leaving my face feeling fresh like never before. The truly remarkable thing is that it was actually faster than disposable razors. I used to spend half the time trying to clean the stupid cut hairs that get stuck in between the blades on those things. The two edges and stainless steel construction totally eliminate this problem, making things way easier. Also, I did not miss any spots on my neck as I would have before and making straight lines to outline my beard is simplified, as this razor is actually cutting the hair, and doing so in a predictable way. No nicks or cuts either. I'm convinced that you would have to either be retarded or be shaving during an earthquake (which is pretty much the same thing) to cut yourself with one of these. Basically, after shaving with my DE razor I'm no longer sure exactly what a disposable razor is intended to be used for. Thanks to Ray for running a great shop, and everyone here for the good info.

Welcome to B&B and to D/E-shaving. I have been shaving this way for four months and I am enjoying so much that I mourn the 15 odd years during which I was using disposables and missing out on all the fun. IMO, the only thing that speaks for cartridge/disposable-shaving is the fact that you can get a sub-par socially acceptable shave with few or no nicks in 5 minutes flat without having to go through any prep whatsoever. The shave is totally devoid of any enjoyment but this is not a problem if you have not tried D/E-shaving quite simply because you do not have anything to compare it with. My routine which I do every other day is about half an hour of utter bliss and I doubt I will ever trade it for a fun-free fast shave any time soon. Enjoy your shaves and do not hesitate to ask questions.

Congrats on the shave. But tell me, why don't you plan on being a regular here?
This is a great place to be, and believe me just be being around and posting you'll learn so much. Don't be a stranger. :thumbup1:

Welcome aboard.

You may not realize it, but you have in Southington a resource that's truly unique in the entire country. There's no other place I can think of that can give you the advice and sell you the products (including a proper vintage DE razor) at the storefront level.

Ray is an active and supportive member of this forum and a really good guy.

Browse around from time to time, and thanks for your story.
