What's new

Darwin Lover affair over?

So the Darwin Adjustable failed to sell for the second time of asking. Starting price of USD 1250 might have had something to do with it!!

those adjustables are probably one of the rarest safety razors you can get. if i collected them, i would buy it promptly!

I think the recent insanity was limited to approximately two individuals, and they both got one.

+1.. The madness will hit another razor.. I saw a gold Aristocrat go for over 200.00 recently. It would have gone for no more than 75.00 last year at this time, prices look as if they will continue to rise.

Razors as a whole anymore have seriously increased in price across the board. Yes, we will still find the odd bargain in the wild or on the Bay but I am amazed at how much they have gone up in the few years since I started....

i think you are right about that, but i dont think the prices of these razors will cool down too much.

Yep - I would agree with you as well. I have my Darwin Deluxe, and I paid in the neighbourhood of $350 for mine - minty and cased. At the time, it was and still is by far the most I have ever paid for a razor and likely will remain my most spendy shaving purchase. I remember feeling some angst about the purchase, but it all went away when I got it in my hand.

It remains the centerpiece of my collection and a smooth and excellent shaver. I'll never sell it. I hope to give it to a grandson someday who I will teach the ways to :)

$350 seems a lot, and it is a lot for a razor, but if you ever needed to sell it you could double or even treble your cash on it, i know you are not into selling such a piece, but when you look at it like that it makes the outlay seem not to bad at all.

$350-$400 was the going rate for minty Darwin's not too long ago. I thought they were expensive then, little did I know where prices were headed.

Funny you should say that, but I've always considered my vintage razor collection an investment of sorts. Considering the way the market has performed the last few years I felt good knowing I was purchasing top quality items that I could use and enjoy in a practical shaving sense, and it also makes for an attractive display and hobby.

Combine that with the virtual certainty that they have nowhere to go but up in value and it's all an easy decision in my mind.

There is not much of anything you can buy new today, use with regularity and be almost certain of no value depreciation. This hobby is fantastic in that sense.

Exactly..... How many walbusch b5s, obscure high end german, or lovely french sets do you see though.... I think that stuff should be commanding more value as you so rarely see it. Even a beautiful but mostly unknown de like a permedge... I see more darwins than I see of under the radar stuff like clean examples of cooper flip tops...

Looking at this thread while looking for images of cased Darwin adjustables; razor did eventually sell for US $1,275 in December of 2013. It was cased with a leather case, which does not appear to have been a Darwin case.

I thought the seller (from Switzerland or Germany, I think) offered it for trade on BST here also.
