Custom Tang Stamps?

Just wondering how you guys put your custom logos (makers mark) on the tangs of your blades. I search but could not find any threads that dealt with this specifically.

Also, looking towards the future, I'd like to dabble on some Gold Dollars. Once the GD logo is ground off, is there a good easy way to add your own simple mark to this? Probably the same answer as above, but didn't know if starting with a GD made any difference.

One way is as stated to have a custom stamp built. That is hammered/pressed into a tang BEFORE hardening. The second is r=to have a stencil made with your makers mark, and have it applied by electro-chemical engraving.

You'd have to do electro etching for hardened steel.

I actually ordered a custom stamp. Even when the steels I had been working with weren't hardened, it was nearly impossible (while the steel is cold) to put a decent mark on the stuff I was dabbling with (O1 tool steel). Dead hammer blows were incredibly hard to do, and I even tried a Hydraulic press, but, it was kind of scary, so, I decided no more. I imagine that it would be easier to do if I heated up the steel.

That said, I think Electro-etching is how most guys are putting on their marks.

Both of the above answered your question.
I just wanted to add, if your planning on modding a GD, then putting your own markers mark...I would considered that to be bad form.
It's one thing if you want to mod one and etch some design on it but if your removing their mark and adding your mark...... its a little like fraud.

I hear you, but if I have reground it and made a totally custom razor out of their blank, aren't I entitled to then claim some ownership to the resulting razor?

Plus, I'm not looking to sell these or anything. Just playing around and having fun. The marks would just be for me. I would be looking to mark my razors with a spider.

It's an interesting conundrum. Does Livi mark his regrinds?

While GD's are rough (some more then others) it's still sold as a finished product. That being the case, to me , regardless of how much it's modded it's still a GD.
Now if your getting unfinished blanks and you are doing the final grind, polish, fitting and scales then I can see at least the ability to take some ownership with a markers mark
(Livi regrinds are unfinished blanks)

Assume for a minute it wasn't just a $3 GD but instead it was a Wade & Butcher that had a broken tip. You regrind the tip and add a thumb notch..... Does make it your custom razor or a just a modded W&B. I would say 99.9% would just consider it a modded W&B

I get your point completely. Im not disagreeing with you, But just playing devils advocate for discussion...

The GDs are sold as a finished product, but are they? Many here have said that they are not honeable without some modification. So starting with an unusable razor, modifying it so it can be used and to enhance aesthetics, then polishing and adding new scales, I would have completely transformed the razor. Have you seen mycarver's gold dollar 7 day set? He put more work into those things than was put into them before he got them. That's got to be worth something.

Also to get a full sense of the difference between a heavily modded or improved to function Gold Dollar try cutting, grinding, drilling and finishing a piece of 01 tool steel or similar to make a razor. After you're done get a Gold Dollar and "finish" it. It will be easy to see the difference then. Been there myself.

+1

I never knew how much the difference is between a full restore with rescaling, and a full custom razor until I tried it. No matter how beat up, rough, and pitted a finished blade is, it takes considerable less time to restore and/or mod it, than making a totally new blade.
