Just so everyone understands:

. . . The newly-released Surface has an ARM chip, and uses Windows 8 RT.

It will not run old (Windows 7 and earlier) Windows software.

The Surface that runs _full_ Windows 8, and has an Intel chip, hasn't been released yet.

Officially.

But I saw a clean install on a Dell Inspiron tower today and it was impressive.

i'll wait till they work the kinks out..... (haha Microsoft)

iPad killer...no
finally a tablet that could potentially replace your laptop....yes
do i want one...sure
would i use it to its full potential...nah

I love the "apple killer products". Last time I checked my apple stock is worth $680 each. Microsoft releasing one solid tablet after numerous phone flops is promising ;)

I'm really interested in the Surface. Not because it's competition for the Ipad, but because it's something that I can use for work. Right now, I have to wait for developers to produce apps and get them approved, and then buy them. If I can just run the stuff we already have on a tablet, it will be a game changer.
Example: Right now, we have inspectors who use old tablets, which are pretty much laptops with touch screens. They cost us $1300 to lease for 3 years.
We looked at replacing them with the Ipad. $650 to buy, expected life span of 5 years. But the software they need costs an extra $500, plus an additional $150 a year in maintenance. And it doesn't give them all the tools they need, it's a VERY light version of the real software. So we passed on the ipads. But if I can get them something with an Ipad form factor that will run the apps in their native environment? Yea, that will save us a lot of money.

I spend most of my day RDP'd into multiple servers and connected to both SQL and Oracle databases. I'll need one just to test stuff out...right? Help me justify it to my boss!

i have to agree, even though i own an ipad, i use it for entertainment only. there are A LOT of business that have adopted them but the question is what programs do you have to run with it? i think most of them are just web related, Comcast for example, my tech had one, it was basically used as a troubleshooting guide and checklist. but if you need to hook it up to a piece of equipment...good luck. thats where the Surface comes in, readily available software, readily available hardware, readily available accessories.

for entertainment purposes the iPad reigns king
for business purposes any other tablet is better, and looks to be the Surface will be King.

anyone know the price points yet? i've seen $500-$1500..?

The Surface with Windows Pro might be what you're looking for. It has an X86 chip, Intel Core i5, and runs Windows 8 Pro.

It will allow you to install and use your current software.

It's coming soon...

Chris, that is probably what i'm going to sucker my boss into buying, or I may just buy one myself. My current desktop has an i5, and its considered a 'power machine', since many years ago I used to do mapping which was very resource intensive.

Any idea on price and release date?

From what I've read it may be released some time in January. Not sure on the price yet.

Here are a few more x86 Windows 8 tablets that are coming soon.
