Could someone help me with selection

I have been reading reviews on fragrances at basenotes and that has not helped me at all, everytime I think I am interested in sampling something I read how horrible it is.
So I think there is enough experts here to guide me to a few wonderful scents.
The only cologne I have now that I actually like is SCS New Spice,I enjoy the smell and it relaxes me in the morning but it does not last long at all.I tried Bond #9 Little Italy this morning and completely hated it,who would pay $150 for that.
Here is what I think I am leaning too.
1.Something NOT fruity or floral.
2.Not unisex, something about having a scent that a woman wears too bothers me.
3.Something that will last more than 4 hours
4.A scent that I can actually tell I am wearing something
5.I am over 40 so nothing for the 20's crowd but nothing that says I am a old man either.
6.I do not have a budget limit.
7.I prefer something that is not mainstream, who wants to smell like everyone else.

So,there you have it.I will welcome any advice.

You might enjoy a spicy sandalwood scent like Art Of Shaving Sandalwood, or perhaps a tobacco fragrance like Creed's Bois Du Portugal, or a strong vetiver like Guerlain's. If I were you I'd just go to a store that has a very wide selection of fragrances (not your typical mall) and sample the daylights out of everything to figure out my likes and dislikes. This is such a subjective area that you may get diametrally opposing opinions on the same scent, or sometimes you'll sample some frag raved about by almost everyone and think "meh, whatever'.

Penhaligon (and a few others like Truefitt & Hill) will send free samples of their colognes, so this may be worth your time to write them a quick email.

I have tried Pens Endymion and it just bored me,so I lost interest in trying the others.
The Creed Millesime sounds fruity to me.
The Art of Shaving Sandlewood sounds great,I guess there is no samples so I will just purchase that one,I can't believe I have never heard of it.
Not. fan of Vetiver,so pass on that on.
Creed Boise De Portugal sounds great,I wonder if I can find a sample?

I wish there was a store around here to smell of the various scents but I live in a small town in Texas, there are none within a 2 hour drive.

Keep em comin boys,I would like at least one or three more.

I'll bet if you call the Creed boutique in NYC and explain your situation they'll send you a sample or two. They were pretty cool when I went in there.

The Creed Millesime sounds fruity to me.

If I were you I'd skip the Pens line entirely.

With the Creed, you might be thinking of Imperial Millesime . . . Tabarome Millesime is a traditional sandalwood/tobacco masculine with not nearly as much fruit.

My recommendation: try to determine what scents you like the best - do you enjoy spices, woodiness, masculine florals like lavender, violet, geranium, or things with leather, etc.

Some timeless classics:
  • Eau Sauvage by Christian Dior
  • Grey Flannel by Geoffrey Beene
  • Vetiver by Guerlain (lemon, vetiver, tobacco)
  • Habit Rouge by Guerlain
  • Green Irish Tweed by Creed (violet leaf)
  • Yatagan by Caron
  • Pour un Homme de Caron (lavender & vanilla)
  • Chanel Pour Monsieur
  • Pierre Cardin Pour Monsieur

Samples of virtually anything can be procured cheaply at: http://theperfumedcourt.com/

You might try Terre d'Hermes. Woody base with citrus and a little spice (plus a metallic note some have called flint).

Dunhill (1934) sounds like a good possibility to me.

Endymion is my least favorite Pens, so I would not necessarily give up. Maybe English Fern or Opus.

When you say not fruity, does lemon and orange count?

Now that alot of choices there.I guess I need to get to ordering the samples.

You know I really don't know If I would like orange or lemon but I could try anything. It is kind of fun trying new scents.
I may be up late tonight.

Well. In the points spelled out in your OP, #s 6 & 7 state that you don't have a budget and you don't want to smell "mainstream." So I'm gonna go out on a limb here & suggest that you check out the world of ouds.

If you're not familiar with it, "oud" is the Arabic word for Agarwood, or Aloeswood oil. It's an essential oil that's distilled from the wood of the Aquilaria tree. It has an incredibly complex, manly smell that I find to be almost trance-inducing (that's a good thing, as far as I'm concerned). And believe me, no one else will be wearing it.

The flip side is that it's hard to come by and very expensive. Tiny amounts of oil cost a bundle. But it's very strong -- a little goes a loooong way.

If this interests you, I suggest you look here, here & here. Agar Aura is having a sale until 8/14 so they might be your best bet right now, price-wise. Oriscent sells very high-quality oils but some of his prices are ridiculous. But even the tiny quantities of oil you get in a sample will last you a long time. And while you can't place an order online via their website, the guys @ Oudimentary are very cool. Send them an email asking for samples -- they'll hook you up. They did it for me.

Good luck!

The Creed Millesime sounds fruity to me.

The term Millesime is applied to several Creeds. It basically means "best of crop" or "best vintage" - something along those lines. Some have fruit and some don't.

Tabarome Millesime is a pretty straight forward scent. The citrus is pretty fleeting. But it is "fruit" and if that bothers you, you may not like it.

Top notes are ginger, mandarin orange, bergamot and lemon; middle notes are sandalwood and tahitian vetiver; base notes are musk, tea and tobacco.

Bois du Portugal is quite nice. Lavender and sandalwood mostly. A very dignified and well regarded wet shaver scent. By the way, Bois du Portugal was extremely popular in Dallas when first introduced. The anecdotes I've read is that BdP was a huge seller on the coasts and in Texas. No idea why.

Tons of male scents open with some citrus, but opening notes are generally pretty fleeting. I'm not sure how heavy your aversion to "fruit" is. I have a guess you don't want a scent where the fruit carries into the full wearing of the scent.

I was just trying to pin down what you meant by "not fruity"! Not many scents are as fruity as Bond No. 9 Little Italy, if I am recalling it correctly. Sounds like you might be fine with some citrus in the mix. There are probably thousands of scents you might like. You probably came to the right place for suggestions!

To clarify, Paul placed the order above with Agar Aura. With the exception of the first item on his list which is a full 3ml bottle, he ordered samples of 4 different oud oils.

That first item -- Mukhallat Al-Naqi -- is a blend consisting of frankincense, oud, rose, sandalwood, and god knows what else. Imho, it's amazing stuff.

Paul, for the sake of my own reputation I hope you enjoy these oils! :w00t:
