Cosmopolitans

I know this may be considered an effeminate beverage in some parts (probably because it looks like a Shirley temple), but does anybody else enjoy the tangy, refreshing taste of a Cosmopolitan? This is definitely one of my favorite summertime cocktails.

I love them, as well as most other classic cocktails. Here in NYC, "retro" cocktails are quite popular, certainly with those of my age (60s).

I am my wife are fanciers of Cosmos. They are a nice refreshing beverage after a hot day.

You have to be comfortable with your masculinity to both admit that you drink one and that you enjoy one as well.

Manhattan, or Martini (GIN!!!!!). Sazerac is a great cocktail, but unless you're in New Orleans, no one knows how to make it. Hell, no one knows how to make a good Manhattan or Martini anymore. Mixed drinks are probably best made at home, unless you're blessed with the rare bartender who knows what the heck they're doing.

Cosmopolitan? No.

A real classic, but sadly my mixological Achilles' heel. Must use fresh lime to do it properly, of course, but for some reason I never get them quite right. SWMBO shakes up the cosmos and I take care of everything else. This said, 9 times out of 10 I'm opting for a martini (pending olive availability) or a glass of scotch.

I must have never had a good Cosmopolitan, because the one's I've had have tasted like turpentine (or what I imagine turpentine would taste like) or nothing but juice. My perfect summer cocktail is a gin gimlet, up.

Try getting them made with a potato vodka. Monapalowa or Chopin (if your feeling rich) are two brands I commonly see in bars. I get none of the solvent taste from a potato vodka.

The other Cosmo specific tip I have is to try them made with unsweetened cranberry juice. With fresh lime, unsweetened cranberry and a potato vodka you wind up with a crisp, clean drink that you don't even notice the alcohol. Well until you're on your four glass.

I make them at home with this recipe (for one glass):

2 oz vodka -- I use the Kirkland brand
1 oz triple sec -- usually DeKuyper or Hiram Walker
2.5 oz of 100% juice cranberry juice
juice of one quarter of a fresh lime

Give it a good shake and pour into a chilled Martini glass (if you don't own an "official" Cosmopolitan glass).
