Cologone for a 24yo

Hi,

I'm looking for a cologne for my age. I'm 24 working in it with an "Apple guy" look (if it helps).

Do you know any colognes that would be good on me ?

Thanks

:D I shouldn't have said that :D
I mean shirt, jeans and sneakers... not the suit type.

Well, trumper's is the only perfumer whose whole lineup I have tried, so I can recommend Trumper's GFT for a spicy citrus scent (good for cool or warm weather), and Trumper's Skye for an aquatic. I like both pretty well. I don't personally use them, though. I may be 18, but I am the suit type.

I can't say anything for Truefitt & Hill & Taylor, because I've only tried a couple of their scents, all of which seemed more fitting to a businessman than a jeans-and-teeshirt apple guy. Some other members will have to comment on the other two T's. I'm guessing that you probably don't want to shell out for Czech & Speake, Creed, or Penhaligon's, though.

That extra information helps a little............. but what do you like in the way of scents? What colognes have you had/enjoyed in the past? Are you located somewhere near a large department store so that you can go and do some testing?
The more information you can provide, the easier it becomes to provide useful tips.

I recommend ordering a sampler from Geo. F. Trumper's. They're something like $8, shipped. Specifically request Skye and GFT, though. Just send them an email right after you've ordered, including your order number.

I have :
Versace Pour Homme
Kenzo Pour Homme
Hugo by Hugo Boss

Welcome to the forum, benoitd. Thanks for writing in.

Pretty good starting line up that you have already. Are you look looking for something for work, for clubbing, for dates, for general hanging out?

Any idea what you might like? Citrus, leathery, spicey, Oriental-y, outdoorsy?

Are you looking to for something unusual? Something cutting edge trendy? Something old school? Something retro maybe--as in a scent that was very hot, say, 20 years ago, that you can wear sort of ironically. Something squarely in the middle of what is trendy now? Something that may or may not be super trendy soon? Subtle or loud?

Something more for summer or something more for the upcoming fall and winter? Day or night?

Upscale, really upscale, or funky hip? Easy to like or difficult, but hip, at least hip among certain folks that think they know "quality"?

Are you looking or variety? Are you going to wear lots of different scents or are you looking for one signature scent?

Something kind of like the scents you have or something very different?

Something you likely to like as a man, or something the ladies may like more than you do?

Be prepared for a wide variety of suggestions no matter how you answer any of the above! There is really is not substitute for doing some reading, getting a bunch of samples, and taking some time to really figure out what you are looking for.

Beware though! Scents can become very addictive, and it does not seem to matter whether you start out what the one signature scent to wear everywhere or what a different scent for every occasion, you may find your self on the path that goes from one is not enough, to five are not enough, to 50 are not enough!

I think you're looking for YSL - Rive Gauche pour Homme

Honestly I am 24 and I will suggest go to a good place , not Macy's and try out stuff. I suggest Neiman Marcus.

I like something "light" I can use the day at work. It's more for an everyday use.
An unusual parfume could be good but definitely not something too old school (not a perfume my grand father could have).

I'm not good with the different kind of sent and I don't plan to have a date with it so it's a scent more for me than for the ladies.

I actually use Speick shaving cream.

What's yours ?

I already tried to test some but i really don't know what i'm really looking for or the sellers are useless...

Try "He Wood" by Dsquared2, it's a clean, woody scent, and my personal fave. Sephora and other fragrance stores usually have this, so it should be possible to sample before buying.

I would look at the Perfumed Court. http://theperfumedcourt.com/They sell multiple decants of high end colognes at a reasonable price. This gives you a chance to try various EDTs and find what works for you. Even better, they break down the decant lots in assorted, interesting ways. You can find them grouped by award winners, fragrance houses, what famous people wear (actors, musicians, celebrities etc.), cologne types and more. If nothing else, looking through their numerous (literally hundreds) sampler packs will give you some ideas on what is out there. You may really like the sampler packs they have which are based on level of experience. http://theperfumedcourt.com/Categories/Samplers--Sample-Packs/Sample-Sets-by-Level-of-Experience.aspxThe site is like Colognes 101 for a recent college graduate.

Well, you came to the wrong place then! :biggrin1: Lots of us could probably be accused of wearing and being unnaturally enamoured with things your grandfather probably would have felt were too old-fashioned for him! I am only partly kidding! :001_smile

So not old school, sounds like not retro, not 1980s power frags, not too avant garde, sounds like no gourmandes, aouds ands psuedo aouds sound like they are out. Hard to tell what you really ought to be spending. I would say not to jump on the super expensive scents, at least yet.

In contradiction to the last sentence, I would say you want to visit with the Neiman-Marcus folks not the Macey's folks. I would not buy anything for awhile. For one thing, you want to test some things over several hours each time, and not just go by immediate impressions. I suggest that you go by the Creed scent station and ask what their beggest sellers for men are. I could tell you but I am saving typing. Try a few and see if those are something you want to shoot for. If you like one in particular we can probably suggest something similar that is not quite so dear. If you are feeling a little adventuresome, nearby is probably the Tom Ford counter. Ask to try their best selling TF's, too. Way overpriced but it may give you an idea as to what really appeals or does not appeal to you in a quality scent.

My guess is that something like Hermes Terre D'hermes, or Guerlain Habit Rouge, or maybe the Gucci mentioned earlier, is going to appeal. Or as Josh says YSL Rive Gauche pour Homme. That one is probably an excellent bet!

Brooks Brothers Country Club might actually be an excellent bet for you. Light, should work for the office, not everyone will be wearing it, but solidly within a standard deviation of the mean and readily available.

I am soon to be 49, and I very much liked the Versace and Gucci scent in the bottle, but on me, not so much :/ I picked up some Fresh Water from Lili Bermuda - nice modern light citrus scent. I have a sample of Eucris on the way from Geo. F. Trumper, but the Castle Forbes scents look very intriguing to me as well, especially the Lonach. Trying to find a sample of that, but no luck yet.

How about's TOBS Eton College - sounds like it may work for you:

Eton College: Inspired by the tradition of Eton - the premier college of royalty and the aristocracy - and especially formulated for its young gentlemen. It possesses a fresh invigorating yet lightly scented fragrance combining sparkling citrus oils with rich woody undertones to enchant the senses of the young - and the young at heart.

Trying to match your age and your look...

L'Instant de Guerlain Pour Homme EdT***
Guerlain Vetiver***
Penhaligon's Racquets**
YSL Rive Gauche Pour Homme*
Creed Original Vetiver**
Creed Aventus***
Penhaligons Endymion*** (may be better as a "dating" scent)

There is nothing "wrong" with the scents you already have. The ones I've listed are a bit less mainstream and will set you apart a bit. More distinct.
