Collar Stays

Sort of a random quick question. I usually get my shirts made with the stays sewn in, but I have a couple MTM's I got awhile back randomly that use removable ones. I usually grab a handful of the plastic ones when i am at the cleaners, but I am getting kind of over using so much plastic (these things don't last). Has anyone used the metal one, and how much longevity do you get out of them?

Cheers,

Love the metal ones but lost them over the years. Mostly, I forgot to take them out before sending the shirts off to the cleaners.

On a side note, I no longer am required to wear button down dress shirts so the problem disappeared for me

The metal ones not only last longer ... they'll outlive the shirt if you don't lose them ... but they also work better than the plastic ones, which can bend a lot.

I bought some brass ones. With 3 different lengths to accomodate a range of collar widths. They work great. Just gotta train yourself to put them back in the little container when you take em out.

I got the metal ones recently, but keep forgetting to take them out. Especially on gym days, when my work clothes go into the gym bag.

I got some nice brass collar stays at Men's Wearhouse. $12.99 for a set of 3 during a bogo sale (got a nice suit coat hanger for the other part) They work quite nicely, I've had them over a year and they show no signs of wear.

$image.jpgMy daughters got me a nice set of collar stays for Father's Day last year. They all say "I Love You Because... " on one side and say something different on the back such as " you checked under my bed for monsters". I love them. Personally, I'd never use plastic because they're too flimsy.

Wow, those are great! Do you know where they came from?

StayClip has an executive set that I bought a couple of years ago- 16 monogrammed stainless steel collar stays, a leather wallet to hold them, and a key-ring like device that also keeps them together if you don't like the wallet. They look great and should last forever.

Some of the metal stays seem to have rough/sharp edges, and I do not know if that is the reason for this or not, but I find metal stays tend to wear through and poke out of my collar tips.

The aftermarket plastic stays at Brooks Brothers or Joseph A Banks seem to tend to be thicker and stiffer and thus better than what comes in many suits.

Mother of pearl, horn, or even real bone collar stays are very nice, if hard to find and expensive. One does have to remember to take them out before sending the shirts to the laundry!

Do yourself a favor and check out the George Trumper website. Along with their fine shaving products, they offer sterling silver (hallmarked, even) collars stays in pairs, with cute little leather wallets for storing and transporting.

I like StayClip quite a bit. Price is reasonable and they should last a lifetime.
