Cold weather = dry skin = more irritation?

For the past few weeks, my shaves have been less than wonderful - more irritation, more nicks, etc. I haven't changed razors and my technique is the same, so I am wondering if dry skin due to colder weather might be the culprit. Has anybody else experienced this?

Dry skin could very well be the culprit. I've been overdoing it with astringents lately and as a result, the skin on my face has been pretty dry. I've noticed the difference in my last couple of shaves where my entire face has felt like razor burn. I'm laying off astringents for several days to let my face recover.

Yes. I live in KS. Last year I spent the week between Christmas and New Year in Steamboat, CO. Shaves turned horrible. I'm sure it was due to a combination of exposure to cold, dry air/wind and lots of sun, plus I was still figuring out DE shaving and had just started using a Gillette HD Rocket, which was more aggressive than the razor I was accustomed to. I found an old thread here where the poster talked about going back to his Fat-handled Tech whenever his face needed some recovery time. I tried it, and it worked.

Had a reprise of the experience (though not as extreme) a couple of weeks ago when I did a road trip to Boulder/Steamboat for some hiking and biking. First week back my face was a little raw and nick-prone. I laid aside the LC NEW, which had become my main tool, and tried a less agressive TTO for a few days. It worked again. It may be worth noting that whereas I use Astra SPs in OC razors, I loaded the TTO with a Feathers, which are sharper but work better for me in milder razors.

One more thing, my face doesn't like alum at all in the winter.

You may want to try some Unrefined Shea Butter. i think it may remedy the situation. Fantastic moisturizer. Good luck.

I just bought some yesterday for my heels (too much time in flip-flops) but never thought about using it on my face. Kinda funky smelling, I think.

Yep! I live in a colder climat, summer's not that hot and dry air. I've been in more humid countrys and find my shaving less irretable, so the cold might have that effect on your skin as well! Moisture up!!

as the weather gets colder,we tend to take even hotter showers, and that really sucks the protective oils out of the dermal layer. As a result, the skin get dry, flakey and easily chaffed and irritated.Watching the water temp helps, but a light non greasy lotion will sooth after a hot shower, making the skin more pliable for the next shave.

Moisturize and don't forget to drink plenty of water. Drink a little more than you think you need. You'd be surprised what a difference this can make.

I noticed the same thing. I just use a little bit more aftershave balm after the shave to better moisturize the my skin and it usually does the trick.
