What's new

col.conk......

Definitely try one of the Col. Conk soaps. They are decent and inexpensive soaps. The Almond is my favorite. The Bay Rum is okay, though I don't like it as much as other's such as Ogallala.

Conk bay rum was one of the first shaving soaps I tried on my journey beyond "goop." I've since found better glycerin soaps and better bay rums, but I still do use Conk in the rotation and think their bay rum smells good.

If you're Conk curious, you don't have much to lose. Definitely a better shave for me than some of the other inexpensive ones that get tossed around here (like Williams or VDH)

I've neither used, nor smelled the Bay Rum, but I love the Lime. Based on my experience with the Lime and what I've read about the others here, Col. Conk is an affordable soap that performs well with a decent scent.

It's so cheap that trying it isn't really an issue. My experience is that it performed like a soap costing twice as much. So it's a bargain, but I don't use it because it still doesn't outperform TOBS or Tabac or any of the other more expensive soaps.

If you don't like it on its own, it's fun to mix it with a cream to create a superlather!

Agreed. If you're curious, definitely try it out! It's worth the try, and having used the almond and lime (and maybe the bay rum too) I can vouch that they are good soaps!

I've had Conk Bay Rum and Amber, liked both for scent and performance, especially considering the price. Nothing to lose!

I thought that I'd heard that Conk was VDH?

It is, technically. It's made by VDH and re-sold under the Colonel Conk brand name.

That said, it's my go-to for shaving soap. I'm partial to the Bay Rum variety. I carry it in my travel kit and frequently use it at home as well. One of these day's I'll get around to trying Superlather with it, since I have some free samples of AoS unscented cream sitting around my house.

Give it a try if you're curious. Like the other guys are saying, for the price you really can't go wrong.

should i try it?? is it worth it?? does the rum one smell good??

I favor Col. Conk's bay rum scent over most of the others I've found. Ogallala's smells too much like eggnog to me, Saint Charle's Shave smells pretty awesome.

Having trouble finding a soap that really performs though. SCS, maybe... but Musgo shamed it. I should try Mama Bear's next.

Conk's bay rum was the first soap that I ever tried when I made the jump to straight shaving. I won't beat a dead horse and mention the value, but I will say that I love their bay rum scent. I can't get enough of the rum scent, and even though I now shave with Tabac, I still keep a puck of Conk's bay rum in a mug next to the sink because it smells so good.

Plenty of other people seem to have good luck with the soap. For the 4 bucks it is on amazon, or other places I'm sure, it's worth buying. I had no luck with the lime or almond conk I ordered. There was no protection, but everyone is different. The almond does smell really good though.

You can't go wrong for under $ 4.00. I'd definitely give them a try. Many people like the almond but my favorites are the bay rum and amber.

You can email Col. Conk and they will send you slivers of each soap and small vials of the aftershaves. I actually shaved with the amber sample this morning, not sure why when I have so much other stuff ... But every time I try any of the samples I'm impressed at the value you get and the shave is just fine. What I do with the samples is use them individually for one shave and then I collect them all in a little bowl and let them mix. Last one left is the lime sample.
