chin-up bars

Does anyone have any recommendations for reasonably-priced yet not flimsy freestanding chin-up bars? I tried the Iron Gym, but cracks started developing around the doorframe, so I think something freestanding might be the way to go.

Thanks.

I also have the Iron Gym, and suffered from the same problems. Three doorways later and I'm using it in the hallway entrance now.

If you want indestructible, elitefts.com makes one for $600+.

There are links to plans for homemade ones at rosstraining.com.

Do you have an unfinished basement? You can hang a bar from the joists with metal strapping, total cost about $10.

I'd get something like that, but there just isn't enough room with my heavy bag and other junk. If I can clear more space, I'd still rather get a squat rack. I'd like one that I could just bolt to my wall.

Most squat racks have a chin-up bar built in at the front. It's a little low but it works. I made one at Home Depot and bolted it to the ceiling of my garage. I'll post a pic.

Low budget but it works

I have the Iron Gym and never had any damage to my doorways/walls.

I suppose it has to do with the material/age of the wall. I'm sure plaster can crack, but drywall seems to hold up fine, or at least mine does.

I have even done weighted pullups with an extra 40 pounds on my back...no issues.

The idea of the pipes in the garage is something I thought about doing before the Iron Gym came out.

If you have access to the other side of the ceiling, you can reinforce it properly to avoid an unfortunate crash and injury.

Darker wood is your reinforcement:
