Cheap Scuttle

Excuse my cheapness, but does anyone know of a cheaper pottery store online that has a scuttle for less than $30...

...and there are cheap ways of accomplishing similar goals, but not with the same level of aesthetics.

There's the Norpro Dip Chiller available from Amazon for $13 or so as described in this thread:

There's the very recently posted self watering pot for about $9 from a local nursery from this thread:

Or there's my silly contraption utilizing a candlewarmer and a couple of teacups:

Note: The main reason for this photo was to show off my freshly poured VDH Deluxe soap stick in another thread.

another user here, jockeys, did a post a while back about a redneck scuttle that cost him almost nothing. i think if you do a search you should find his post and where he got it from.

the other option is to have a look at the moss, dirtybird, and others, and work out what you want and take to a local potter. from my experience, they will usually knock you up something pretty good in the price range you are looking at (you need to have done most of the work in terms of measurements etc, or at least be pretty clear with them about what you want).

I have a "ghetto scuttle" consisting of a deep heavy ceramic bowl, and a larger less deep plastic bowl. I also have a hot water boiler I picked up for a mere $3.00 at the local Goodwill.

I use the water boiler to bring water to a boil, and then poor some piping hot water into the ceramic bowl. I then rest the plastic bowl on top. This keeps the lather really hot: too hot actually, as the lather begins to break down into bubbles from the heat.

I have been experimenting the last few days trying to find the appropriate mix of boiling water, and hot tap water, so the lather doesn't break down.

Does it look as pretty on my counter-top as an actual scuttle? Nope, but it performs the exact same job, and just as well for around $5.00. :tongue_sm

Those self watering ceramic flower pots are all over ebay for anyone who can't find them in a gardening center. Just do a search for "violet pot" if anyone is interested. Some of them are pretty darn nifty looking.

Only problem is by the time you pay the shipping fee that most sellers are charging you could probably buy a real scuttle.
