Cheap Nib - comparison / advice needed

Hello Gents!

The Nib bug bit, and I stopped by Staples just before closing tonight to round out my date with my wonderful wife. I was in a rush since they were closing the doors, trying to find a Pilot Metropolitan (or at least a pack of Varsity's). The only FP I could find was a Franklin Covey Freemont ($20). And then someone actually was able to point me to the Pilot Varsity 3-packs (and also noticed some Bic FP packs??). I was also in such a rush, I forgot to look for a pack of the Staples Sustainable Earth paper (doh!).

My question is this: do any of you have experience with the Freemont and/or the Metropolitan? I know the Metropolitan has had some good reviews, so I'm thinking of returning the Freemont and doing an online order for the Metro - unless I hear some good things from you on the Freemont.

Thanks!
B.

Brandon I was hoping by now someone would have come along who had used the freemont pen, but i can tell you i have heard many more reviews postive for the metro then for you franklin covey one. I would put my money to the metro and a converter for it, rather then the FCF sight onseen just from what i can see around the interwebs about the two pens

welcome to the NIB I hope you enjoy what you end up with and have some fun with us

Appreciate it Syn! I was doing a bit o' digging last night, and now have added to the list the Kaweco Sport, Lamy Safari, and Pilot 78G for consideration as well. B&B's search function isn't too great, but if I google "best starter fountain pen," I'm able to find several threads in B&B on the topic - have yet to check all of those out...

While I search for the right first FP, I'm also beginning the Palmer Method lessons since those are actually FREE! =)

Thanks again!

Ian wrote this great article on your last three comparing them to one another it certainly worth a look for you

...that review is exactly why they are being considered! It was a great article, thank you for sharing it (and to Ian for writing it). Right now I'm leaning toward the Kaweco, eyedroppered (I think). I busted open the 3-pack of Varsity's, just because I don't do delayed gratification very well, and I have been enjoying those. I'll probably give it a go at refilling them when they run dry. I have yet to learn about inks. Hmm, sounds like some good reading for the evening! =)
