celebrity deathmatch EJde89 v. merkur slant 37C

YMMV I call b.s. I started a few months ago wetshaving w the ej89 based off geofatboy youtube channel. Soon after the addiction hit me and it hit me hard. Within 3 weeks I moved to the merkur slant, searching for more aggressiveness. I stuck w slant for a dozen shaves then decided to give ej89 another shot in rotation...

The fact is, the jagger is far superior, shaves closer, and more comfortably than the slant - and the game isn't even close. The merkur is awkward, design is not conducive to comfort and sure as heck doesn't get aggressive points.

And a side note, witch hazel is a joke talk about placebo, it feels like I'm splashing water on my face. A 12 oz bottle of water that costs 13$, that is.

Discuss.

Cardinal sin being the first to reply to one's own thread, but my next razor is a 1937 gillette Sheraton open comb, TTO. If that isn't aggressive as hell I'm going to start believing an aggressive razor is like the Easter bunny or unicorns, a myth.

EJ 89 is my favorite razor. I've not tried em all by any means but I almost don't feel the need to try another. EJ89 is just amazing, well weighted, beautiful, forgiving on the face, relentless on the whiskers.

Try the Muhle R41.

+2 I've been using my EJde89 baseplaet with a Muhle 2011 R41 top plate lately. What a shave! It's super aggressive, and leads to the closest shaves I've ever gotten. I love my EJde89, but sometimes I want a closer shave. I've found that this is the way to go.

First trials with the Merkur slant I was disappointed. Put it down for a few months, tried it again and really like it. YMMV

You'll be sorely disappointed. It's a mild razor yet effective. The Senator on the other hand is a bit more aggressive.

EJ89 is a great razor, and the slant is last on my DE "to try" list.

Despite the caution I think I will still go for it.

Mostly agree with you on the WH.

I suppose my impressions are different. The DE89 is a mild razor in my opinion. The Merkur Slant is moderately aggressive. I'd say the Slant would be the clear winner in a cage match. :001_smile

Both are nice razors that can deliver a quality shave if used correctly. Just a question of tastes, that's all.

I have a Merkur 37C Slant and recently picked up a Muhle R89 on the B/S/T. I think they are both excellent razors. In my opinion, the Merkur really performs when shaving 2 or 3 days growth. It plows right through in 2 passes, nice and close without irritation. I'll have to say though that I become more impressed with the Muhle every day. I haven't used another razor since I got it!

The Mühle R89 (same head as the EJ) is no match for my Gillette Rocket HD. The Rocket is far more effective for me.

I think that Merkur 39C should be the only slant from Merkur because it covered all the lacks of his little brother 37C according to weight and the feel on skin. Absloutely the top, but after a short but effective learning curve.

I see a lot of difference of opinion on the board, over things like this. Who knows why exactly that some people find Derby blades are great and some think they are the worst. Both are correct. Same thing here. Though it's opinion, there are real reasons for the opinion, for that person, even if no one including that person can articulate the full explanation.

And I don't get the witch hazel benefit either.

Edwin Jagger, no contest. I've used both razors. They both deliver very similar shaves, smooth and not too aggressive. However, the EJ head is not as cumbersome as the Merkur Slant which means I can do much more precise detail work. Primarily XTG and ATG passes underneath my nose. I also think the EJ is a more attractive razor. Aesthetically it's one of the best. Superior plating, beautiful lines.

However that is my opinion, others may feel differently. YMMV.

For me, my Merkur 37C is somewhat easier to use and gives me a somewhat closer shave in difficult spots than my R89. That being said, I love both razors.
