Catching up with some old friends

Since April, I've pretty much shaved with nothing but a couple of Gillette LC News, first a two-piece #77/88 and then a plateless, brass ball-end that I've used almost exclusively since June. Prior to acquiring a #77 from Jake, my two main razors were a British #58 and a #21 (both of which also came from Jake). For a while, every time I thought of him, Steppenwolf's "Pusher Man" would start playing in my head.) I brought the #21 back out twice this past summer, but ended up finishing with an OC each time.

I stretched the weekend before last to 4-5 days and did a road trip to CO for some eating, drinking, hiking, and biking with old friends around Boulder, Steamboat, and Estes. When I got home on Tuesday, I gave myself the worst shave I've had in time out of mind, and continued in the days since to have unsatifying results. I think I initially got off track due to chafed skin dry/thin air and sun, and then I just couldn't get back in the zone.

So this morning I pulled out my trusty old #58, loaded it with a fresh Feather (I abandoned Feathers for Astra SPs when I took up OCs), and -- in the spirit of the reunion -- lathered up my first brush, an Omega Pro #11098, which hadn't seen use since early this year. We had an absolutely wonderful shave. The #58 was more effective and efficient than ever in my hands. My guess is that the OCs served to improve my technique (sense and use of angles, lightness of touch, etc.). It was a heart warming experience. And I'm sure I'll be renewing other acquaintances soon as well.

I got to dig around for my 2 piece, I've been on an Aristocrat binge lately - they are such easy razors to use, I get lazy about changing.

Lol. I just thought of this as I decided to pull out my very first soap that I bought, out from the back of the cupboard under the sink. Original Proraso. This is the soap I first started with and tonight had an perfect 10 shave with it. With the cool winter months dropping in temperature the menthol felt really good against the skin.

I'm glad this finally got a few replies.

I will use Proraso this morning. It was my second soap, right after Cella.

As for TTOs and Aristrocrats, I was really happy to re-connect with one of mine. I have a lot of nice ones, and it looked like I was on a path never to use them again.

I had a guy I met in an exchange of messages on eBay (someone else bought the #58 he was selling) say that while he also was pretty settled on a 2-piece LC New as his grail razor (as I was at that time), he thought using the same razor all the time could result in complacency. I believe that may hold for me. A regular rotation isn't my thing, but I'm going to make occasional substitution part of my practice.

Congratulations on the reunion! i thought you were going to say Pusherman by Curtis Mayfield made you recall the gent who sold you the razors. Hee hee.

i use a Slim and then polish with a Fusion , 7 o'clocks and goo currently , not familiar with the 21,58,77,88 but i guess OC is open comb .

Sorry. The #21 and #58 Aristocrats are British-made twist-to-open razors and the #77/88 are British two-piece open-comb (long) Gillette NEWs. I kinda got stuck in a rut with OC NEWs, which isn't bad, but it's been nice to fall back into shaving company with old favorites.

It's all good, right? Except what isn't.
