Casio G-Shock

I'm thinking about getting a G-Shock for weekend use. I'm wondering if anyone has any experience with their solar or atomic models. Specifically, I'm wondering if the solar models actually maintain power well without batteries, and whether the ability to sync with the atomic clock is worth it or merely a gimmick.

Thanks.

The older models were very iffy. You had to be outside with the watch pointing in the precise direction for the sync to work but the newer ones are much better. my son has one and it works all the time without any fiddling. The solar models are fine as long as you wear the watch most of the time and it's exposed to light.

I've had a couple of G-Shocks. One solar. Never had the atomic version. The solar watch worked just fine. I wore it daily though. I'm not sure how it will do if it spends most of its life off your wrist.

I love the solar/atomic features on my G-Shock (I've got the Riseman). I've had no problems keeping it charged in rotation with other watches, or receiving time updates overnight.

I have one as well and wear it daily. It has held up well. That said, if you aren't going to wear it daily allowing the solar panel to recharge the watch, then you can expect some limited functionality. During the winter, with long sleeves covering the watch, it would not recharge and then the light function would not work. The atomic function is great, very durable (18 months of daily use), but when I need the light function at night and it is not there...

I've had a solar/atomic model for a few years now and it's worked flawlessly. Bought it for cheap at Costco. OK, it isn't elegant by any stretch, but it's fine for my casual office and for weekend wear. I've never had the battery level go below "medium," even in winter, and after a few outdoor wearings in spring, the battery level is pegged on "high" for the next six months.

The atomic function seems to work very well. It automatically adjusts to DST in the spring and goes back to regular time in the fall. No fuss. It just works.

This model, which is atomic and solar, is really all you need at a decent price:

At least for me, the main drawback of a lot of G-Shock watches was the excessively flamboyant designs. This watch is more in line with the classic g.

I have that model as well. Excellent watch for the money.
I've had no issues with the solar/atomic features. Always works and is always accurate.

I'd buy it again.

Hi, I have had a G-shock solar & atomic for 3 years (GW 7000DU, I think). I love it. Super accurate (you can never be accused of being late), solar power works fine for "normal" use and its indestructible. You really can't go wrong. Gareth

Do it - you won't regret purchasing an atomic solar. They are both tough and comfortable, and work very well. I lost mine behind my nightstand for almost a year, and when I found it, I laid it on top of the nightstand, and it synced and juiced right up. Amazing watch!

I have the Casio Waveceptor in navy blue. I just saw them at the Costco here in San Diego 2 weeks ago for between $30 and $40 in black. Mine has run flawlessly for the 8 years I have used it. I place it on my bathroom sink counter at night, it syncs with the atomic clock at 3am, 4am and 5am. It powers up flawlessly as well.

Seriously, strictly from a functional standpoint, considering the combination of accuracy, features, and durability, is there a better watch than a G-Shock? Considering price, is there a better value?

Considering price and reliability they are very hard to beat. I have had mine for over 6 years and wear it daily out in the field. Not bad for a $30 watch. The next best thing I have is a Citizen Eco-Drive but it is not a daily wearer and cost closer to $300.

I have one and agree that they are super reliable and accurate...Beware Casio G-Shock watches can also become a very tempting AD also!

I've had my 5600 about 3 years. It is flawless. Perfect time.
It syncs every night.

The solar function is excellent. With, like, 10 hours of sunlight (earned over a few days), it will run for 180 days. There's never been a problem with capacitor charge.

the new top of the line 5600 comes with a metal/resin option, radio sync with the atomic clock in boulder colorado and solar power, i think it lasts around 3-6 months without any sun exposure, the GW-M5600BC-1ER is one of my favorites along with the mudman,
as for the battery life and sync, you can still get non solar models and with a good battery it will last up 5-6 years, but the solar ones are quite dependable,

I've got my eye on you

Casio watches are cheap, dependable - and the timepiece of choice for bombmakers.

The watches have been used so often in terrorist plots that the feds have urged airport screeners to look out for them.

They've been cited as evidence that Guantanamo Bay detainees need to be locked up.

There are, of course, millions of Casio watches sitting innocently on the wrists of upstanding citizens, but they have also been tied to numerous bombing attempts, with terrorists rigging the circuitry to make them into timers.

Ramzi Yousef, the mastermind behind the foiled plot to blow up 11 U.S.-bound airliners in 1994, chose Casios.

Ahmed Ressam, an Algerian convicted of plotting to bomb Los Angeles International Airport around 2000, bought a pair.

Numerous Al Qaeda soldiers are believed to have built bombs using the digital watches, which can be bought for less than $30.

Counter-terrorism officials put out an advisory in 2005.

"Casio watches have been extensively used by (Al Qaeda) and associated organizations as timers for improvised explosive devices," it reads.

It noted the watches are available around the world and inexpensive. Long battery life also makes it valuable, because the bomb can be planted far in advance, giving the terrorists plenty of time to get away.

Hilarious. I once noticed in a picture that Osama Bin Laden had the same cheapo Casio Illuminator that I used when running. It's a good watch!
