Cartridge Question

This may be a dumb question...but here goes.

Since reading up on cartridges, the overall problem with the Mach 3 type blades is that the multiple blades just are not necessary and in fact counter productive. Is this correct?

If so, does anyone produce a single blade cartridge that would fit into modern razors? Or am I oversimplifying things here?
Wouldnt a single blade be better for the face and produce an overall better shaving experience for those who use cream/soap and brush....while leaving DE's for the more experienced?

Thanks

Emil

The closest thing I know of is the injector razor, which uses a proprietary blade dispensed from an injector cartridge housing.

Injector razors aren't made anymore, but are quite plentiful in the used market, particularly from the 50's and 60's era. Blades are still available from some drug store chains and on-line. Not as cheap as DE blades per blade, but they seem to last longer than DE blades.

Injector razors are somewhat easier to use than DE razors but not as idiot proof as the pivoting head cartridge razors.

Personna makes the BumpFighter razor, which uses a cartridge with a single blade.

It is however, incapable of giving a close shave: it has a guard over the blade, to prevent a really close shave; the idea is too prohibit irritation/ ingrown hairs by limiting how close of a shave can be achieved.

I would second Chris, and recommend the injector as being closest to a single blade cartridge style razor. Especially if you get one of the later model injectors from the 70's. They look and feel a lot like a standard modern cartridge razor and the blades, while more expensive than DE's, are no worse in cost than cheap cartridges ($1 a blade at most). Plus, you only have two options for injector blades, which are Personna (ASR) or Schick, which means you aren't overwhelmed by the number of blade choices. Both brands seem to work pretty well also. If you post a wtb you'll probably find a member who'll sell you a late model mild injector at a reasonable price.

+1 on a Schick Injector!! I never tried one until this week. I just got a "gimic" 1970's Stick Schick model. What can I say–I was a kid in the 70's, and I'm a sucker for cheesy marketing!

Anyway, I LOVE the shave I get with it. I love the small razor head for getting around my head. I love the sharp blade. I love the whole thing! I recommed finding a style you like, and trying it out!!

I am now getting to like my injector more and it is very close to a cartridge razor in terms of feel and motion, also i know its a disspossable but folks on her talk highly about a bic.

The other thing you could do is go to WalMart, buy a "Bump Fighter" razor and a 10-pack of Personna "Twin 2" cartridges (this will set you back about 7 bucks, total). This cartridge system has TWO blades, not one, but they are very close together. The head is fixed, just like a DE or an injector. The cartridges are cheap (35 cents apiece).

This is a very good shaving system and you can learn how to shave with a fixed head device at a very low risk of slicing yourself up.

I, too, think the injector razors are pretty sweet.

Here's an older type (late 30's thru 40's E type) Shick:
