Can you have too much lather?

I'm relatively new to creams. So I was able to get a huge lather in my shave. However, It seemed often I would mostly shave the lather instead of the beard. I thought maybe I made to much lather and it effected my shave. So can you have too much lather for an effective shave, or is my technique just off?

No, you can't really have too much lather in so far as it actually keeps you from shaving properly. It's your technique. The only result of too much lather is that you wash it all down the drain.

Maybe have a look at your lather and see if it's doing it's job.
Is it cushioning properly? is it slick?

If you think that it's fine then it may be something in your technique.

Charles de Zemler used to tell his barbers not to make the lather too thick. I prefer a moderate layer myself: creamy and dense, but applied so that I can still tell where my facial features are.

Someone once pointedly stated that your shaving cream only needs to be as thick as the hairs in your beard. He's probably right, but that makes for a pretty thin shave. Seems like he was kicked off B&B right after that.

I can see that a too thick lather might make the blade "hydroplane" over the actual whiskers, but you'd have to work awfully hard to achieve that

Can too much lather not clog the razor up frequently?
Anyway, I like to do several short strokes before each rinse of the blade gap, rather than every other stroke!
