Ouch.!.try Evaporust...I have seen a few members use it for really deep pitting..or sit down in a chair and hand sand away til the active rust is gone

Yes it can be saved, although I'm sure you're going to lose some width because of the pitting at the edge..

some steel wool to knock most of that off, then start with some 150 grit sandpaper....no problem. I've seen and worked on worse :)

Looks like it will clean up. I'm betting there are only a few spots of deep rust.
Kind of a general rule...red rust is OK, black is a problem. There are times when that doesn't hold true but most of the time it's pretty accurate.

the pitting near the heel is the most worry-some.

But I have seen some amazing transformations, so I am guessing it will be a beaut by the time you are done with it Evan.

Hey all, so the consensus was about right on.

I'm not going to make this a beauty queen but it did come out pretty nice with some pitting and there will be some repair work on the hones later.

Unfortunately the scales are really warped and while trying to remove them one broke. I'm not to upset as there was a LOT of bug bites anyways.

Now just need some time to make a new pair and this hopefully should return to active duty in the near future.

Looking at the pictures in the light (I did the work last night) looks like I need a few more passes on the caswells to clean up a few more spots I missed.

Wow! I'm impressed the etching on the blade stayed that sharp. I thought for sure you'd lose that.

Yeah, there's a bit more work to be done, but at least now you can see the light at the end of the tunnel :)
