What's new

Can it be?

Okay...here is the set up...
Gillette Tech
Derby Extra
Vulfix Super Badger
VDH Shave Stick

So here's the deal...I have had this Tech for almost a year and never tried it. I know, I know... dont tar and feather me. I got my Lady Gillette and just loved it so much that I never really rotated razors. I decided to finally try the Tech the other night. I lathered up and had a good lather. I actually had to do two passes on my legs. I never have to do two passes. I also had to use a bit of pressure. Some may argue that it was the blade because I know that derbys dont get high praise any longer but the blade was smooth, no pulling or scraping or anything. I could hear the blade cutting but it just was not cutting much. Is the Tech that gentle??? That is my only conclusion. I have never had this problem before. I have a new lady gillette that I am wanting to try and I have an aristocrat the I want to try as well. But I just can not get over the fact that the Tech was so smooth, but did not cut well and I had to go two passes. Just strange.

The Tech really is very gentle, and often requires more passes, but usually delivers a smooth, comfortable shaves.

The other thing is that the angle for a Tech is slightly different than what is needed for the Lady Gillette. If you use it a few more times you may find it cuts better than it did the first time.

I did notice a difference in the angles. It will take some more practice to be proficient with the Tech for sure.

Definetly sounds like the angle wasn't quite right. It's a pretty narrow window to hit, as far as getting the right angle for best blade exposure. You're using pressure to compensate, but you should not have to.

It's one of the things that (imho) make it a great starter razor -- it coaches you into good angle. Don't give up on the tech. It's not glamorous, but some of the very best shaves I've ever had were with the feather+tech combination.

The Tech was probably the most produced DE Gillette ever had. It was also issued to soldiers during WII. Two answers come to mind as to why it was so popular. #1 Easy to produce and #2 Gets the job done

It really is a great razor. I'll always have a Tech in my rotation. :001_smile

A tech clogs up real easy. This could be part of the problem, that no one has mentioned. I could recall cleaning one a couple times per shave, if needed. I started using one again after many years, and I was surprised on the positive results. A mild razor I think is just an element of time. In other words it will do the same job as an aggressive razor, but it will take more time, but with much less of a chance in cutting oneself.

It doesn't take much hair off with each pass, but it can make passes all day long without causing irritation. The british wide-slot tech head probably clogs less (i haven't noticed much difference but it doesn't cause me trouble anyway).

It's the safest safety razor i can think of, I could get a DFS with it when blind drunk (not that i would...). It's under-nose performance is probably wasted on your legs, but that teeny head is brilliant. :)

For legs though, a Rocket HD would probably kill it! To me it feels like a tech but it takes off far more hair in a pass. Two passes to BBS for me, instead of three with the tech. The extra weight makes it even smoother, too.
