Can irritation come from beard growth?

I have noticed that whenever I try to give my face some rest and let the beard grow for a few days, it results in irritation because it becomes itchy and I scratch it.

Can it be that growing a beard for 3 or 4 days results in irritation and bumps? Or is the problem coming from something else?

Does anyone else have the same problem?

This week I just started to shave every day and it is much better than when I let the beard grow out for a couple of days.

On my neck, the hair grows along the skin... meaning parallel. If I let it grow for more than 2 days, my neck gets red from the hairs rubbing into the skin. The reason mine irritates is because of the way it grows... Yours may do it for another reason.

So yes, this can happen, and yes, there are others who struggle with this.

Hoever, good news! You may have to shave more to avoid that irritation!

In my experience I've found the type of blade and angle(s) used affect the degree of the irritation.

Over the years I have attempted to grow a mustache or goatee. Every time I did this the new bristle would begin to itch. Others told me that eventually when it grows out the itch goes away - but I never got that far. I would just shave and remedy the situation.

Yes, I get this on my neck where the hair grows in odd directions. I get a rash if I leave off shaving for more than a couple of days, and it clears up when I start again.

Yeah it's the same for me it gets real itchy. However I have grown a beard in the past for a few months, and it is true that past a certain point, it doesn't itch anymore.

I think the solution, like most of you said, is just to shave every day or every other day and never let the beard grow more than 2 days in a row.

I'm prone to ingrown hairs and neck irritation. Shaving every day helps a lot.

This week I've shaved every day and my skin looks and feels great. Definitely a good solution, and I get to enjoy a good shave every day!

My shaves ar far more comfortable if I shave every day. Letting my beard grow only causes irritation for me because shaving a grown in beard is just more difficult for me. Keeping the stubble short by daily shaving makes my shaves a lot better and irritation free.

I have the exact same feeling. Not only that the irritation is different, but also found that the way it feels when faceturbating is different. So I can say for example that I like more Super Iridium faceturbation then Astra SP faceturbation

same here for me mainly on my neck though i also get sideways hairs and i think that has a lot to do with it. i actually get red spots and dry skin peeling off and after i shave it off its terrible for a few days with the dry peeling skin. i have to then shave nearly every day uncomfortable or not to make it go away. what sucks though is it does cause some blood and irritation for the first few shaves, so yeah sucks and i just shave either every day or at most every other day.

If any of you actually get a rash, raised red skin, or white to yellow flaky skin like mastershake, you may actually have a skin condition called Seborrheic Dermatitis, which is something I myself am afflicted with on my face and on my scalp (it can actually occur where ever hair grows on the body.)

This definition is from google search: Seborrheic dermatitis is a common, inflammatory skin condition that causes flaky, white to yellowish scales to form on oily areas such as the scalp or inside the ear. It can occur with or without reddened skin. Cradle cap is the term used when seborrheic dermatitis affects the scalp of infants.

and hear is a much more in depth article: http://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/seborrheic-dermatitis/basics/definition/con-20031872

I've found that if I'm growing the facial hair out it will itch a little as the ends of the hair get long enough to touch the skin, but it goes away after a couple of days as the hair is long enough that it bends instead of being short and pokey

This has also been my experience. I grew a beard last summer and at about day 4 through day 12 my face was really itchy. The itch went away after that. I grew the beard out for about a month, then shaved it off.

While I had the beard I still had to shave part of my neck to keep it looking somewhat clean and distinguished. But that was only every 3-4 days.
