What's new

Can anyone place this Old Type?

I recently bought this 1918 460B "Old Type" Standard set. It has the #102 (thin) cap, as would be expected of a pre Aug 1921 Old Type.

But, there are certain oddities about it. I've searched in all the usual places for answers, but haven't found what the answers. So, it's time to field this question to you guys.

  • The patent numbers (Pat.No.Nov.04.N) on the inner tube go around in the top lip of the tube, rather than being stamped length wise. I haven't seen any other examples of this.
  • What does the "N" in the patent number mean?
  • The serial number is on the band, just above the knob on the handle. I thought this occurred only later, on the post 1921 models.
  • There are no numbers on the inside, on top of the comb. I thought this also came later, after 1921.
  • Instead of numbers, the Gillette diamond (sans arrow) is stamped twice: once on the bottom inside of the cap, and again on the top of the comb. I can't find any examples of this.
  • Mine has that "G inside a D" on the bottom of the comb. What is this supposed to mean?
  • Finally, the case seems to be typical except for the fact that it has a little sewn in patch with the Gillette logo on it. From all the examples I have seen, the norm seems to be a large silk-screened logo.

Are these things special, odd, normal? I hope someone can educate me.

Have a look at this recent thread we've had going, and this older one of mine.

Everything but the actual patent inscription on your razor matches what we're seeing there -- even down to the "F" serial number and the "G-inside-D" mark which presumably indicates that this set was sold in France originally. Also worth noting is the fact that the inscription on the bottom of the case uses the patent numbers rather than the dates, which also happened on the ABC Pocket Edition cases near the end of their run. I'd be more inclined to guess your set to be from something like 1913 or '14 than 1918, personally.

Could you possibly post some more photos of the patent inscription on the inner barrel from other angles around it? I'm very curious about that.

I made this wacky "panorama" of the numbers on the inner tube:

Oh, and I bought this from a person in France (who bought it at a "boot sale"), so your thoughts concerning that it was sold in France seem to be right on the money.

I looked through those posts very carefully, and a few things struck me:

  • Neither Porter nor Achim can place these mystery razors. So it's hopeless for us mere mortals to get a fix on these "siblings" (as Vargas ever so poetically put it).
  • Porter, Vargas, and I have all come into these razors very recently. (Has someone begun to release these into the market from some dark place in Europe? :scared:)

I don't have many reference books - only the black and white PDF version of the Krumholz book.
Is there no mention of this type of razor anywhere in all of the reference material out there?

That is a great question. I was going to ask it earlier. It seems like there is a pattern of these oddities lately. Since i am not a collector i really cant add much from experience. I have Waits, Krumholz, Russell Adams, The Cutting Edge and many online links and publications that i have saved and studied. But i am sure Ervargas or Porter will come up with something soon.

What source have you found to consistently give you the answer you were looking for? I'm thinking about downloading the Waits PDF. (But then, I could spend the 15 buck on some soap and blades... It's a tough choice!)
