C&S No. 88

Tried it. Too rosy. The search for the one high-end fragrance I'm allowing myself to buy continues. So far, Floris No. 89 is in the lead. I'm guessing based in the 88 experience I can nix Hammam Bouquet as well.

I don't find the two (HB & #88) too similar - I do identify the rose in both, but these are very very different to me.

So... give Hammam a try before you turn your back.

...and a propros nothing, don't forget to give Knize 10 a try!

Thanks.

I actually did give Knize 10 a try. As I mentioned in another thread, I liked it (after being initially repulsed when I first opened the tester vial!), but I just don't feel it's "me." For whatever reason, I associated the scent with guys who are older than I am. I'm guessing that someone I knew in my parents or grandparents' generation wore it; it has been around for over 80 years.

If I have to try Hammam, I have to try Hammam. Who am I to say no? (The C&S actually smells nice; I just can't imagine wearing it in my professional life.)

Sweet...one LESS person I have to worry about smelling like, lol...

Haha, I agree.

My only problem is that so far I have only met one girl who likes 88. I constantly find myself putting on 1805 if I will be around women I'd like to impress, whereas I wear 88 for me (I have a slightly unhealthy love for this scent). I'm glad that not a lot of people wear it, but I do wish more women liked it! Perhaps it's just the age bracket of women I see...

I've found women to be drawn to it, actually. If you avoid any mention of it being "floral" or "rosey" if it comes up in conversation (usually preceeded by "oh my god, you smell REALLY good...") and leave the mystery of #88's scent up to them, they'll find it interesting and unique...which is kinda what I'm going for. It's not a "hey look at me!" or a "I smell like everyone else in here because I want to fit in" or a "I drive loud cars and wear expensive suits" scent...to me it says "I am not like anyone else, and it's up to you to find out why...", lol.

Haha, i think that every time I "show" this scent to someone I tell them it's a rose scent in advance and they think it's too girlie for me and dislike it before even smelling it... Maybe I've been going about it all wrong :tongue_sm

Once I get a bottle (after making the sample last as long as possible - I really like this stuff!) if anyone asks, I'll just say it's Czech & Speake #88. I wouldn't normally go into detail as to what's in a fragrance anyway. If someone else likes it, they'll have their own opinion as to what it smells like. Unless, of course, I get asked by someone who has passion for frags and wants to discuss details.

I just got a sample of No. 88 from the Perfumed Court (along with Floris Santal and Creed Bois du Portugal) this morning. I really like the scent. However, when I put it on, it probably lasts for about 10 mins. and then fades. It's possible I'm just not putting enough on. Anyone else have a issues with No. 88 fading very quickly? If so, I can't really justify dropping $150 on a bottle of nothing.

I need my $150 cologne to last until at least after lunch time. I gotta impress the girls at Chipotle.

Some find it doesn't last at all, while others (like me, for ex.) find it'll last all day - it's a body chemistry thing. For those that it does last a long time on, the expense is justified. For others, it would be stupid, lol. C&S Oxford & Cambridge is like that for me...I put it on and it's gone within the hour. C&S Cuba I absolutely LOVE...in the bottle. I put that stuff on, and it dries down to a scent reminiscent of a tire fire that was extinguised with ammonia...

another aspect that #88 shares with Pen's Hammam Bouquet (and Blenheim Bouquet, for that matter): on me it lasts and lasts!

Lucky me! (Sort of compensates for my Pinaud's Lilac Vegetal aversion. Heh.)

Seems so weird. 88 definitely lasts on me. I have never had enough HB to figure out how well it lasts on me. Probably not well judging by the other Pen's I have used more of.

Of course, C&S Oxford and Cambridge has some of the least staying power of any edt i have ever used.

I'm not ready to spend $150 on a bottle of anything! I do not mind spending a pro rated amount on a say an ounce of something. I am not ready to settle on one edt! I am too fickle, I guess. Also, I am not sure that 88 is much of a summer scent, although heaven knows I seem to be wearing it every day!

I have to confess, my friend, that I was a little surprised that you had not chimed in on this thread until now . . .

It was still pretty strong on me after 7 hours, and only faded awar at about the 9 hour mark.

I thought I had chimed in! GoldenMonkey is right.

There must be something to this scent for it keep all of our interests like this.

I just had a longer look at Basenotes re this frag. Apparently I like the designer John Stephen's work. How does one get from 88 to O&C to Citrus Paradis? What is the back story on this 88 juice anyway? Released in 1981? Did it sell any at all in the first years it was out? Seems like a bold frag for any year, much less for the early 80s.

I love this stuff, but on me the No.88 lasts about 5 hours. Cambridge and Oxford has a max of 2 hours only! Must be our different body/skin chemistry.
Not sure if the amount applied has much to do with this, though. Yesterday afternoon, for example, I applied a tiny drop of an own creation on my left arm and the same amount of a Castle Forbes scent on my right. The CF scent is now (after some 13 hours) totally gone, but I still can sniff my own creation, faintly, but still a bit there. Right now I am doing some "Longevity" studies, and hope will post them here in a few days: whenever I use a scent, I also apply a little on my arm, so I can sniff during the day until it is not longer (for me!) detectable. Quite interesting results.

I put a little on the back of my hands and on the inside of my wrists for the same reason.

I'm curious, too, to know to what extent "Longevity" is affected by: A) quantity of scent applied, B) whether scent is sprayed or dabbed on, and C) to which parts of the body the scent is applied.

I'm looking forward to your findings.
